COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A child care center reopened in Monroe County Hall of Justice in Rochester, offering free care and fun activities for children from 6 weeks to 12 years old in Room 300. The service runs weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and gives families access to books, toys & resources.  ABC 13
  • The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds are set to headline the 2026 international airshow on Aug. 8 and 9, with the U.S. Marine Corps F-35 B bump jet and the U.S. Army Golden Knights joining other aerial acts; tickets are now available and more performers will be announced early next year.  WXXI News

  • Theresa Mazzullo is stepping down as Excell Partners CEO after 20 years, and COO Rami Katz will take over in January. Mazzullo will continue supporting Rochester’s tech scene + economic development.  Rochester Beacon

CULTURE NEWS

  • Organizers announced 13 Club Pass series performers for next summer's Rochester International Jazz Festival, including a tribute to jazz legend Miles Davis on what would have been his 100th birthday. More performers will be revealed in January with the full lineup unveiled on March 10.  News 10
  • Neil Simon’s classic farce Rumors! will run at Blackfriars Theatre from Dec. 11 to 28 for the holidays and offers a fun evening for local theater fans.  ABC 13
  • The Penfield Symphony Orchestra will present White Christmas at Penfield High School with soloist George DeMott, soprano Jessica Best and conductor Jared Chase, as two concerts are scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 14 at 5 p.m. and Monday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Rochester issued a request for proposals today to modernize the Rochester Riverside Convention Center along the Genesee River. The $59.6 million project will upgrade meeting rooms, restrooms, and accessibility features with new design + engineering improvements, and proposals are due by 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30.  City of Rochester
  • Wayne County Judge Richard Healy confirmed a union contract for H2-A apple pickers at Wafler Farms, reversing the farm's legal challenge after the state's Public Employment Relations Board awarded the deal earlier this year & labor organizers now seek back wages and benefits as workers rebuild post-Hurricane Melissa.  Rochester Beacon
  • Erie Canal water remains high in Brockport and Spencerport because the Canal Corporation kept levels fuller for fall fishing and a bicentennial season (ended on Nov. 3) delayed drainage; crews will lower water levels this week so winter depths vary (from a few inches to several feet).  News 10
  • A bill passed unanimously in the House to rename the Avon post office in honor of officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz, who was killed in July 2022; his family supports the move that celebrates his legacy in Avon.  News 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medical leaders in Rochester warned today that an early flu season with a new flu strain has led to a 51% increase in flu cases — urging residents to get a flu shot for extra protection, even if already vaccinated.  News 10

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Lollypop Farm is waiving adoption fees for adult dogs, cats and small animals six months and older from Monday, Dec. 8 through Sunday, Dec. 14 at its Fairport campus and satellite center at The Mall at Greece Ridge — sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition's Food, Shelter, and Love program.  News 10

  • Bristol Mountain kicked off its 61st ski season over the weekend by opening three trails and the Comet Express chairlift + VP Steven Fuller discussed the season on ARC Rochester.  ABC 13
  • Rochester is set for holiday races this season. The Santa Stampede Fun Run on Dec. 14 supports a local charity, followed by the Winter Wonderland 5K on Dec. 20, the Reindeer Run 5K on Dec. 21 downtown, and the Winter Warrior Half Marathon on Jan. 3 at MCC Brighton.  News 10
