  • A local interfaith group has planned Human Rights Week starting Dec. 10 to promote reflection and action on everyday rights in Rochester. The week will feature speakers from multiple faiths and community leaders who will share ideas for protecting basic rights.  Rochester Beacon
  • People's Choice Kitchen will host its annual Angel Tree event on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at three locations + People's Choice, Good Life Collective, and Vision School of Beauty to help ensure every child wakes up to a merry Christmas.  ABC 13
  • Laura Ogle won the Holiday Cookie Contest at the Rochester Public Market on Dec. 8 with her Aztec Hot Chocolate Cookies made with cayenne pepper. The contest, with 33 entries, is part of a festive market offering vendors, carriage rides, and Santa visits through Dec. 18.  Democrat & Chronicle

  • Len and Kathy Dummer have handed ownership of Knucklehead Craft Brewing to sons Jake and Josh as the family owned Webster brewery, known for its local charm, eyes its 11th anniversary celebration on Saturday, Dec. 13 (featuring music by Marty Roberts and special beer and sandwich offerings).  Rochester Beacon

  • Allison Hinman will take over as president and CEO of the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House on Jan. 2, succeeding Deborah Hughes who retires after 18 years; the longtime intern and museum supporter will continue enhancing the museum’s educational programming.  WXXI News
  • International Plaza celebrated Day of the Little Candles, a longstanding Colombian tradition marking the start of the holiday season on Sunday. Guests enjoyed local Latin food & live music that showcased a unique cultural gift.  News 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Yesterday, Monroe County officials announced that every home and business now has access to Spectrum high-speed internet, including rural areas such as Hamlin, Clarkson, Sweden (and others) after a $1.8 million federal investment and over $950K from Spectrum. The expansion improves connectivity for work, school, and healthcare.  Democrat & Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • RCSD has opened school selection applications for families with children entering Kindergarten, 7th grade, 9th grade, PreK-4, and special education for the 2026-27 year. Applicants can apply online or visit the Office of Student Registration (131 West Broad Street); the deadline is Feb. 13.  News 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County is developing a new 10-year solid waste management plan that will consider food scrap recycling into compost and energy, and public meetings are planned to gather input — the plan is expected to be completed in Q4 2027 after aligning with state guidelines.  WXXI News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wegmans issued a recall on Dec. 2 for deluxe unsalted mixed nuts due to possible salmonella contamination. The recall affects 34-ounce and 11.5-ounce packs (with designated lot codes), and shoppers can return affected items at service desks for a refund.  News 10
