COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thanksgiving, Henrietta Fire District crews—along with CHS Mobile Integrated Healthcare—helped a distraught man from out of town on West Henrietta Road care for his dog that suddenly got seriously ill.  News 10
  • Robert Hendy ran the 4.4-mile Webster Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving to honor his late father and daughter, pausing near the cemetery his dad loved—he continued a 54-year family tradition as his wife joined the race for the first time.  News 10
  • Residents in Rochester’s 19th Ward have a turkey that became a neighborhood mascot as it roams the yards along Genesee Street and causes brief delays with delivery trucks. Neighbors call it by several names while the Department of Environmental Conservation asks locals not to feed it (to ensure its safety).  News 10
  • Miracle Valley Deliverance City Church served free Thanksgiving meals to over 100 families using generous donations from local residents — the church has provided this warm holiday dinner tradition for 14 years. Parishioners worked together to prepare a full meal so every family could enjoy a festive dinner.  ABC 13
  • The Fairport Perinton Merchants Association is offering a free holiday shuttle service for residents and visitors from November 29 through December 13, running 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day—shuttle stops include DeLand House on Main Street, Village Landing near What’s Good, and the parking lots of Fairport Junction and The Cannery—to ease parking and boost local shopping.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • On November 25, Dimitri House provided free meals and groceries to local residents as SNAP benefits were frozen during the government shutdown. The center saw a 500% rise in food requests — a surge that will lead it to expand services as local need grows — and its partner Foodlink reported similar spikes across the region.  WXXI News
  • On Thanksgiving, firefighters from the Henrietta Fire District raced to the corner of West Henrietta Road and Bailey Street after a man waved for help when his dog showed a serious medical problem; they quickly placed the dog on a stretcher and took it to another vet, where it is expected to recover. The team acted fast to give the four-legged friend a chance to heal.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Small Business Saturday on November 29 will feature four events in the area: the Red Wings Team Store at 1 Morrie Silver Way will host a free autograph session with Ernie Clement along with 25% markdowns and a toy donation discount, and Monroe Avenue will host Shop Small Monroe with sales, food tastings, and holiday activities. Webster’s 24 E. Main St will see markdowns up to 70% at Oh Bella Co., while Akimbo Bookshop at 713 University Ave holds its final holiday sale before closing—giving residents several local ways to support small businesses.  Democrat & Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, local stores in Rochester are set for Black Friday with JCPenney and Kohl’s opening at 5 a.m., Target, Walmart, Lowe’s, and Best Buy at 6 a.m., and malls such as Eastview, Marketplace Mall, and the Mall at Greece Ridge opening at 7 a.m.—the National Retail Federation predicts holiday spending will surge near a trillion dollars while heightened security measures and special offers, like a free tote for the first 100 customers at Target, add to the day's focus.  News 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Barry Silverstein, a Rochester alum with leadership experience at Meta & Kodak, was hired to lead the University of Rochester’s new Center for Extended Reality. He will begin in January and plans to unite experts from many fields to boost regional research in augmented reality, virtual reality & artificial intelligence.  WXXI News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • RG&E and NYSEG will contact customers in Rochester and Irondequoit to set up appointments for moving indoor gas meters outside—this work aims to improve safety by allowing crews direct access for routine inspections and meter readings, and it requires customers to be home for a couple of hours while appliances are temporarily turned off. The utilities have allocated funds for the project as many of these decades-old indoor meters are scheduled to be updated across the region.  News 10

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Ten Rochester-area tree farms offer families a chance to cut their own Christmas trees this holiday season with features such as wagon rides and live nativity scenes—some farms are open today and continue through mid-December. Prices and tree varieties differ at each location, so visitors are encouraged to arrive early to secure their preferred tree.  Democrat & Chronicle
