COMMUNITY NEWS

  • People’s Choice Kitchen and Service the Community hosted an annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway on Thursday to provide free meals for Rochester families in need — local businesses like Salvatore’s and Wegmans donated items to support the event.  News 10
  • The City of Rochester will open its outdoor ice skating rink at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park on Monday, Nov. 24 and keep it open until Sunday, Mar. 8 (weather permitting) with daily skate sessions and free entry during the Roc Holiday Village event series; call ahead as the rink may be rented during some sessions. This new season offering gives residents a fun winter activity in a prime downtown spot.  City of Rochester
  • A funeral liturgy will be held for Sister Grace Miller — a well-known advocate for Rochester's homeless — at 10 a.m. on Nov 29 at the Mercy Center chapel on Blossom Road. She died at 90 on Nov 20 after a period of declining health and was recognized for her bold work to support the unhoused.  Democrat & Chronicle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Maru Izakaya — a sushi restaurant in Village Gate Square that opened in March 2020 — announced on Instagram it will close soon; its last lunch service will be on Nov. 23rd and final dinner on Nov. 30th with a break during Thanksgiving week.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Stever’s Candies, a Rochester staple since 1946, opened a small satellite store on November 21 at 10 a.m. at 620 South Ave. in the South Wedge—featuring designated parking and hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday—and plans an official grand opening in January while keeping its Park Avenue location unchanged.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Finger Foods Farm in West Bloomfield won the Wegmans Audience Choice Award at the Grow-NY competition in Canandaigua—voters directly picked the honor. The farm will expand its frozen soup distribution to local Wegmans and other retailers in 2026, building on community support for regional produce.  Democrat & Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Performing Arts in Rochester, a new nonprofit called PAIR, is linking local arts groups with sponsors and performance spaces at the Theater at Innovation Square — a partner that offers funding and resources for shows — to ease financial barriers for local performers.  Rochester Beacon

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Robert DeLorme—a sixth grader at Aquinas Institute—is being honored for helping a friend who was considering suicide by connecting him with a mental health counselor in March. His action comes after his family founded the Giselle Delorme Heart of Kindness Foundation following his sister's unexpected death before her 10th birthday.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County Family Court hosted National Adoption Day on Friday in Rochester to honor families finalizing child adoptions from foster care — marking a fresh start for both parents and children. By year-end, 41 children will join permanent homes that offer care and stability.  ABC 13
  • New York state mailed 7.6 million inflation refund checks — a total of 8.2 million will be sent — leaving 600,000 checks pending for those who filed their 2023 tax returns later; eligible recipients in Rochester should see their check in the mail within the next few weeks.  News 10

  • Tiny is a 5-year-old black cat from Lollypop Farm in Egypt looking for a new home—she gets overwhelmed by shelter noise but warms up quickly and enjoys company.  News 10

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bills lost 23–19 to the Texans as their offensive line struggled and left tackle Dion Dawkins was penalized with a false start in the final 24 seconds. Coach Sean McDermott said the Texans’ eight sacks on quarterback Josh Allen — a key factor in the loss — showed that the team had difficulty protecting their star player.  Democrat & Chronicle
