Good morning, Rochester. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sister Grace Miller, a longtime helper for the poor in Rochester—who ran the House of Mercy—died, leaving a legacy of care and service. She raised funds to bury those in need and fought for homeless rights; her work touched many lives.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • An early Thanksgiving meal honoring Rosa Wims was held Thursday at St. Peter’s Kitchen in Rochester and fed between 300—400 community members. Attendees enjoyed traditional dishes like turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, mac and cheese, and collard greens while remembering the public health advocate.  ABC 13
  • An investigation found that families across New York, including a 41% rise in Rochester, are staying in hotels when shelters are full — a trend that has grown since the pandemic increased homelessness. State data show that spending on hotel stays swung from $2.7 million to $13 million in Erie County — officials say hotels lack the essential services that shelters offer and stress the need for more affordable housing.  Spectrum News
  • Automotive technician Calvin Mitchell from Complete Automotive Solutions warns that rodents may damage vehicles by chewing wiring that contains soy and corn and even cause fires as colder weather arrives. He advises car owners to inspect their engines and interiors and use mothballs—dryer sheets, peppermint oil-soaked cotton balls, and commercial sprays—and to park away from trash bins and food sources to deter infestations.  Spectrum News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • House of Guitars teamed with Three Heads Brewing to release the Blue Nose Guitarman Blueberry Belgian Waffle Cream Ale at a 7 p.m. party held on November 20 in Rochester & the event featured live music by Wajah and the Free People along with screenings of classic commercial footage. The special beer is available in cans, on draft at Three Heads Brewing, and at local Wegmans and specialty stores.  Democrat & Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The New York Farm Bureau reported that New Yorkers will pay 20% more for Thanksgiving meals, with a typical 10-person meal costing $66.06 compared to $55.18 nationally. Rising production costs and labor shortages have pushed up prices for items like fresh vegetables and sweet potatoes—some increasing by up to 61%—as the state faces higher grocery bills.  Spectrum News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lauren Dixon and Mike Schwabl received the Monroe Community College Foundation’s highest honor—the Salute to Excellence award on Wednesday—in recognition of over 15 years of dedication that includes establishing an endowed scholarship and launching the Star Power Giving initiative.  News 10
  • Rochester City schools are updating their old buildings and are waiting on an extra $125 million from the state as rising costs have pushed up expenses. Chairman Tom Richards said the project is now in its third phase and will finish by 2033 but could be cut back if the funds are not approved.  WXXI News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • AccuWeather predicts rain, snow, fog and strong winds will cause travel delays in New York next week ahead of Thanksgiving, raising concerns for drivers. The Climate Prediction Center expects near‑normal temperatures upstate—with light snow possible in the North Country—while New York City should see dry conditions in the morning and stronger winds later.  Democrat & Chronicle
