COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local health care union 1199SEIU is hosting a food drive to help families and workers by collecting non-perishable food, baby formula, & feminine hygiene products ahead of the holidays. Donations will be accepted until Nov. 20 at several locations, aiming to feed 20 health care families in need.  News 10
  • Local organizations are hosting food drives to help families facing food insecurity before Thanksgiving—Amerks accepts donations at Blue Cross Arena until Dec. 1 while YMCA centers take items through Nov. 21 and the Uniting and Healing drive ended on Nov. 17. Nearly 160,000 people in the region still need help during the holiday season.  News 10
  • The Child Advocacy Center will host a Holiday Lights Tour running from Dec. 6 to Jan. 1 to support a good cause (Autumn Wiggs and Adrian I. Hale provided details). The event will offer a festive opportunity for the community to enjoy the season.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Teresa and Nigel Ramoutar built Hammer and Nail—starting in their garage with a custom toilet paper holder—to a growing business that makes wood furnishings like recessed magazine racks, vinyl record cabinets and guitar stands; they are about to receive their first patent and plan to create local jobs using customer ideas and hard work.  Rochester Beacon
  • Jay Mohammad has expanded his popular halal over-the-rice box business from a North Winton Village convenience store to a new counter-service restaurant in Henrietta—serving authentic Afghan dishes, American standards, and favorites like honey mustard chicken and a special manto dish; the restaurant operates from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Allegiant Travel Company announced—yesterday—that it will offer a new nonstop flight from Rochester to Fort Lauderdale starting Feb. 12 with fares as low as $69.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Miracle on 34th St: The Musical will run at Roberts Wesleyan University’s Hale Auditorium from Nov. 21 to 23. Chris Lopez spoke with cast and crew about the production that brings a cherished Christmas classic from Midtown Manhattan to Monroe County.  FOX Rochester

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kyler Remington—a sixth grader at Johanna Perrin Middle School in Fairport—helped his mother last spring when she had a severe allergic reaction from a bee sting by running to get her EPI-Pen and calling 911. He is now being honored with the Do the Right Thing award after his school nurse nominated him for his brave actions.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Attorney General’s Office issued a consumer alert Tuesday stating that utilities companies must wait 35 days after a bill is due and provide a 15-day notice before disconnecting service during the cold weather period from Nov 1 to April 15. The alert adds that utilities cannot be cut off during two weeks around Christmas and New Year's (for households with serious health issues or children) and complaints can be filed by calling (800) 771-7755.  WXXI News
  • One week after a water main break flooded the neighborhood along Culver Road and Meredith Street, homeowners are still repairing damage — city officials apologized and are investigating the delay in reopening the road and ways to help cover repair costs.  News 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Patients at Golisano Children's Hospital now have a battery-powered ride-on car built by Rochester-area Honda dealers to help ease anxiety during tests and procedures. Honda’s top engineers spent years designing the ride with easy controls—adjustable seating and a low top speed for safety.  News 10
  • Rochester’s Wilmot Cancer Institute hosted a Lung Cancer Awareness Day event Tuesday in downtown Rochester to teach residents about smoking cessation resources and lung cancer screening options, as part of Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Dr. Carolyn Jones said community smoking is high — one in three compared to one in ten nationally — which is why the institute is focusing on prevention, detection, and treatment.  News 10
  • YMCA of Greater Rochester is working hard to resolve a Silver Sneakers issue that will end its free coverage for seniors on certain Medicare Advantage plans on January 1, 2026—about 7,500 members may have to find another gym or pay a fee. The YMCA will still accept Silver and Fit through Excellus Medicare Advantage plans—further updates will be shared as soon as a solution is reached.  News 10
  • Lifespan was awarded three state grants totaling $150,000 to support programs for older adults, including a $75,000 scam prevention initiative, $25,000 for care coordination, and $50,000 for nutritious food and educational programming at Lily Cafe. State Sen. Samra Brouk secured two grants while Assemblymember Sarah Clark secured one—efforts that will boost services for seniors.  WXXI News
