COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wayne County will welcome home the remains of Sgt. John Pagliuso, a U.S. Army soldier killed during WWII in a bombing over Papua New Guinea whose remains were identified in March. His remains will be flown to the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport on Thursday — a public procession through Ontario, Williamson, Sodus Arcadia and Lyons will follow — with a graveside service set for 11 a.m. Friday in Old Elmwood Cemetery.  News 10
  • A pipe burst on Oct 28 at the Scottsville Ice Arena, flooding the rink and forcing a temporary closure as repairs begin—community members have started a fundraiser to help the family-owned facility reopen, with the rink expected to remain closed through Thanksgiving.  ABC 13
  • SNAP benefits were not issued on Nov. 1 due to a federal shutdown, prompting many Rochester residents to turn to local food pantries—each offering assistance with specific eligibility based on area codes and target groups.   • Foodlink Community Farm hosted its Fall Festival on Oct. 18 to open a new $2 million Edible Education Center that offers nutrition lessons and school trips for residents in the Edgerton and Lyell-Otis neighborhoods. EDUCATION NEWS

  • UR Dining has made Wegmans-prepared meals a permanent option at Hillside and the Pit after a pilot program last school year—this partnership marks Wegmans' first venture into collegiate dining and is expected to boost local business ties.  Campus Times
  • For several nights last week, students in Susan B. Anthony Hall reported strange noises and ghost rumors, but an investigation found only a half-empty bottle of wine, ruffled sheets, and students rearranging furniture—no paranormal activity. Residential Life said residents should keep noise down when moving furniture at 11 p.m. on weekends.  Campus Times
  • UR’s Mexican Students’ Association became official in fall 2024 after operating unofficially since 2022—since then, the club has held meetings and events to celebrate Mexican culture and welcome all students.  Campus Times
  • BRICK Rochester Academy, a new public charter school in northwest Rochester set to open next fall, is a partnership between Rochester Education and Development for Youth and the BRICK Education Network from New Jersey. The school will blend academics with social services to boost support for students and families — aiming to promote economic mobility in the community.  WXXI News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rochester Regional Health today introduced GenoWell, a free DNA screening program that helps residents learn about inherited cancer and high cholesterol risks—part of a partnership with Helix Research Network. The initiative will enroll over 100,000 adults and aims to improve care by integrating genetic data into everyday clinical practices.  Rochester Beacon
