  • Verona Street Animal Society hosted a Halloween pet adoption event on October 31—featuring pets Macarena and Strawberry with fees ranging from free to $25.  ABC 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Mark Morreall, a 69-year-old Army veteran and a cherished member of local veteran groups, died in a fiery crash at Rochester General Hospital's parking garage on Wednesday — investigators reported the crash appeared accidental and a celebration of his life is being planned for the future.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Micheal Bowllan’s family is keeping his art in the public eye by displaying a floral piece at Geva Theatre as part of a memorial exhibit that honors his creative work. They plan to feature more of his pieces at an upcoming show at Lumiere Photo to continue celebrating his legacy.  Rochester Beacon
  • A $3 million donation from University of Rochester Trustee Doug Bennett, his wife Abby, and the Sands Family Foundation has moved the Memorial Art Gallery closer to offering free entry instead of the $20 fee many in Rochester find high.   • FeederWatch begins today and runs through April as bird enthusiasts count feeders to help scientists track winter bird populations. The program, led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Birds Canada, costs $18 for digital access and allows counts via a mobile app or paper tally sheet—data from thousands of participants informs researchers about common species in New York.  Democrat & Chronicle

  • The federal shutdown has delayed the Home Energy Assistance Program—affecting 1.5 million New Yorkers who rely on $280 million in heating funds, and Gov. Hochul’s office is working with county leaders to secure alternative solutions.  WXXI News

  • Rochester Regional Health spent October educating the public about breast cancer—its medical director Dr. Kelly Krupa joins ARC Rochester to share further information as Breast Cancer Awareness Month wraps up.  ABC 13
  • Unionized workers at Strong Memorial Hospital won an arbitration case on Oct. 30 after discovering the hospital had not paid bonuses for longer shifts during staffing shortages. More than 1,100 employees will receive one-time payments between $32 and $16,483 and they have 24 days to submit paystubs to claim additional funds.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • A Rochester woman named Anna Tomasso with a rare genetic syndrome needs a kidney transplant and her family has put up lawn signs to find a living donor — an effort that transplant experts at Strong Memorial Hospital support as a way to shorten long wait times.  News 10

  • The New York State Sportswriters Association released its fifth season set of high school football rankings on Oct. 29 — eight Section V teams remain in the list with East High/World of Inquiry entering the Class A top 25, which kept the numbers steady — while Monroe became the top team among Rochester City School District competitors.  Democrat & Chronicle
