COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The government shutdown has now lasted 27 days and the USDA warned SNAP benefits may end if it continues—local groups like Foodlink and nearby food pantries are working to supply food for more than 100,000 residents in Rochester. Foodlink has already organized pop-up pantries and is urging community donations to help provide meals during this tough time.  News 10
  • Neighborhood kids in Greece transformed a backyard on Lianne Drive into a haunted house—featuring carnival scenes, a mad science lab, and jump-scare decor built entirely by the children over four years. Led by Henry and Andrew Fowler, the group raised funds by mowing lawns and saving holiday gifts and will reopen the exhibit on Halloween while collecting donations for a hospital patient.  News 10
  • Children enjoyed trunk-or-treat events at International Plaza, Rochester Public Market, and Fairport last weekend—organizers said the events spread joy in a tough season. Grace Church will host a neighborhood trunk-or-treat this Friday to give families one more fun way to celebrate Halloween.  News 10
  • Honor Flight Rochester welcomed 58 veterans who returned from Washington, D.C. on Oct. 26, and hundreds gathered at Rochester Greater International Airport to celebrate their service—Vietnam veteran Frank Darling Jr. shared his memories as families marked the homecoming.  ABC 13
  • On Oct. 26, Rochester in Focus revisited interviews that discussed efforts to reform prison violence, regional business investments, and safer microchip production at RIT. The segment also featured local actress Andria Langston talking about her new movie on BET + campaign members explaining that more than legislation is needed for change.  News 10
  • On Sunday, People’s Choice Kitchen on Brooks Avenue fed first responders and people in need in partnership with Service the Community — the event provided food like jerk chicken, mac and cheese, and pizza and also welcomed federal workers affected by the government shutdown.  News 10
  • Yesterday, the 'I Love the 90s Tour' concert at the Rochester Community Sports Complex featured Vanilla Ice, Color Me Badd, and C&C Music Factory and awarded $2,000 in grants to four local nonprofits — free tickets were reserved for educators, first responders, and veterans.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • The replica boat Seneca Chief completed a 33-day voyage that began in Buffalo on Sept. 24 and ended on Sunday at Pier 26 on Hudson River Park—making 28 stops as it served as a floating exhibit to share canal history and mark its 200th anniversary. Gov. Kathy Hochul said the event demonstrated the canal’s lasting impact on community connections.  Spectrum News

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Saturday night, supporters gathered at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center for the 39th annual Golisano Children's Hospital Gala with a Paris theme to raise two million dollars for expanding the Pediatric Emergency Department that now cares for over 32,000 children each year & improve services. Kevin Parker, the honorary gala chair, said the department is operating at twice its capacity and needs more space for proper care.  News 10

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bills won a 40—9 game against the Panthers on Sunday as James Cook rushed for 216 yards and scored key touchdowns. The team forced three takeaways that helped control the game—coach McDermott said the win showed the strong work of the players and staff.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • The Bills played the Panthers on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium after a bye week and a couple of key roster changes—they activated rookie cornerback Hairston from injured reserve and added safety Poyer and defensive tackle Phillips to bolster their defense. Local weather was mild and the game was broadcast on FOX for Rochester viewers.  Democrat & Chronicle
