COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Willow Domestic Violence Center broke ground Monday at 1 p.m. on Skyview Center Parkway off Ridge Road in Irondequoit—starting construction on a new 16,000 square foot Family Justice Center that will provide survivors with civil and criminal legal services.  News 10
  • Yesterday, the Willow Domestic Violence Center broke ground on a new 16,000-square-foot facility at Skyview on the Ridge that will be the permanent home for the Willow Family Justice Center, offering legal support, counseling and social services. The project is funded by community partners and a $2.2 million New York State grant—an opening is planned for next October.  ABC 13
  • Crews have begun setting up at MLK Park for the 7th annual ROC Holiday Village, which will run from Dec. 5 to Dec. 28 and offer family fun and activities — an official announcement is set for 11 a.m. today.  News 10
  • The Rochester Beacon is starting its eighth year after launching on October 18 and has grown to nearly 3 million website pageviews as it offers local news. It will soon roll out a new website — and run a matching donation drive from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 to support its efforts.  Rochester Beacon

  • Little House Coffee opens in North Winton Village—its small space and warm vibe will give local residents a welcoming spot to enjoy coffee.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Twelve women from Buffalo and Rochester received over $30K in scholarships from the Stella Foundation to attend the National Women's Venture Summit in San Diego — the awards covered VIP tickets, travel stipends, accommodations, booth fees, and speaking opportunities.  Democrat & Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Since July, school staff in the Rochester and Syracuse City school districts have faced late, short, or missing pay due to an Oracle payroll system upgrade—placing many workers in financial hardship. The districts are working each day to fix these errors—while teachers unions have filed a lawsuit and called for payroll experts.  Spectrum News
  • Penfield school officials will hold a board meeting today at 6:30 p.m. at the Transportation and Facilities Center on Jackson Road in Webster to let parents voice safety concerns following a tense meeting over an alleged student threat—up to 20 speakers must register by emailing [email protected] before noon Tuesday.  Democrat & Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rochester Teachers Association filed a lawsuit in Monroe County supreme court against the Rochester City School District over payroll errors that began in July when the district switched from PeopleSoft to Oracle—hundreds of teachers have not received proper pay and benefits. The union seeks an immediate injunction to stop further financial harm to its members.  ABC 13
  • Rochester will pilot the R-Future Fund program next spring to help city kindergartners save with a $50 seed deposit — children in need will get an extra $100. The initiative offers free financial education and parent contribution options and will eventually serve all students from kindergarten to 12th grade — linking families to long-term asset-building opportunities.  Rochester Beacon

HEALTH NEWS

  • Millions of Americans risk losing their SNAP benefits in November as the federal shutdown continues — advocates warn that low-income families in Rochester who rely on St. Peter’s Kitchen, which serves 400 people daily, will face growing food insecurity. Staff fear that if the cuts are not reversed, supplies of inexpensive food will dwindle further.  Spectrum News

  • Section V sports reporters selected nominees for the Faber Builders Boys Sports Athlete of the Week (Oct. 13-19), and votes will be accepted until (8 p.m. Wednesday) with the winner to be announced Thursday morning on Instagram.  Democrat & Chronicle

  • Coming off a bye week and a two-game losing streak, the Bills are set to face the Panthers at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bank of America Stadium — they are favored by 7.5 points.
