COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local farms said that a very dry September did not hurt apple trees when irrigation systems delivered the water they needed — Schutt’s Apple Mill and Wickham Farms report a strong harvest. Apple picking will continue for a few more weeks as trees stay in good shape for the holiday season.  News 10
  • Sister Grace Miller, in hospice care, watched virtually as La Madonna Della Strada opened a low-barrier shelter on West Main Street designed to serve 25 individuals and help ease homelessness in Rochester. John Odem handed a $100,000 check to Sister Rita Lewis during the opening—its one-year partnership with Open Door Mission will continue to support those facing addiction and chronic homelessness.  WXXI News
  • Henrietta CountryMax and the local K9 unit will host a Halloween pet costume contest on October 18 at Henrietta CountryMax — pet owners can register from 9 to 10 as judging begins at 10.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • TacoDero Restaurant and Lounge near Rochester airport at 1174 Brooks Ave. in Gates will close at the end of October due to rising food costs, repair expenses and staffing challenges. Its final Taco Tuesday celebration will take place on Oct. 28 from 4 to 11 p.m. with a DJ and food specials while the food truck continues serving birria tacos at local events.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Xerox is cutting its workforce as it merges with Lexmark, a printing company bought in July for $1.5 billion— the firm has begun notifying employees and said it does not need to file New York legal notifications.  News 10

  • The Shimmer Me Fall Fashion Show will be held on Oct. 18 at Grand Occasions on Cumberland Street — local models and designers will showcase new fall styles while Sheila Young-Howard of Beauty Lies Within Agency provided details.  ABC 13
  • Mayor Malik D. Evans today announced the opening of the 'Würzburg the Beauty' photography exhibit by Boris Albert, which is free and open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 31 at the Loretta C. Scott Center for Human Services—across from the Downtown RTS Transit Center—where 37 photos show scenes from sister city Würzburg, Germany.  City of Rochester
  • Landmark Society is hosting its annual Ghost Walk on October 17 and 18 at Lutheran Church of the Word Incarnate in Rochester, featuring spooky characters and a hint of Jack the Ripper. Ghost Walk founder Cindy Boyer and Dr. Tumblety (Tyler Lucero) will lead the event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  ABC 13
  • The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Rush received a $10,000 historic preservation grant to help restore the last surviving subway car—Rochester Subway Car 60—which will have cosmetic work completed in three years. Volunteers and Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 46 apprentices continue work on rebuilding one end and replacing flooring as part of the restoration effort.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • The Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester will host its 25th annual Fine Craft Show and Sale this weekend with an opening party Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and sale hours on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—ticket prices are $60 for the party, $10 for adults at the sale, and free for kids 12 and under to support the gallery.  News 10

  • Nonprofits in Monroe County warned that cuts to federal funds could worsen homelessness after 1,194 people were unhoused, with one group at risk of losing $12 million from permanent supportive housing—this may strain rental subsidies and support services. Advocates noted they are awaiting a Notice of Funding Opportunity—delays could force agencies to reapply next summer, reducing help for families and older adults.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Healthy Baby Network launched the Nest Program to help 200 low-income mothers get prenatal support and a $1,000 monthly stipend for two years—funded by Monroe County's Department of Human Services and the city of Rochester to reduce stress and improve birth outcomes.  WXXI News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Rochester home builders say delays at the Four Mile Creek project are due to a new state law banning natural gas and propane, and they claim the electric grid cannot support the extra demand. The builders urge the state to postpone the law's start until grid improvements are made — a move they believe is key to alleviating the housing shortage.  Spectrum News
