COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rochester residents are reacting to the Gaza ceasefire announced Sunday that expects 48 hostages to be released today (with 20 still alive) as part of renewed peace talks between Israel and Hamas. Local voices remain hopeful for lasting peace while also calling for true self-determination for Palestinians.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Perinton Pizza will mark its 40th anniversary on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. at 7374 Pittsford Palmyra Road—offering a meatball-eating contest, games, entertainment, and giveaways—and will host a food drive for the Perinton Food Shelf to celebrate four decades in business.  ABC 13
  • Webster native Ryan Winn will appear on NBC’s new show On Brand with Jimmy Fallon where he pitches marketing ideas in a competition for a $100,000 prize from brands like Dunkin’ Donuts and Southwest Airlines. The show airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. and Fridays at 8 p.m. on News10NBC — marking his shift from hockey dreams to a creative marketing career.  News 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rochester's last subway car, Car 60, is being restored at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Rush with a $10,000 historic preservation grant from the Rochester Area Community Foundation. The first phase restores the upholstery and finishes—while later work will fix the motors so the car can run—even though no rides are planned during the restoration.  WXXI News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rochester education advocates argue that requiring student portfolios to prove critical thinking can help voters focus on facts rather than feelings. The New York State Board of Regents recently approved a Profile of a Graduate that stresses these skills—similar standards are already used at 35 schools.  Rochester Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Unemployed New Yorkers will see their maximum weekly benefit rise from about $500 to over $800 starting next week—Gov. Kathy Hochul said this change follows the state paying off a $7 billion federal loan used during the pandemic to support the fund.  News 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Highland Hospital Breast Imaging will host a Breast Cancer Awareness event at Baber African Methodist Episcopal Church on Sunday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.—the event will provide educational resources and information on early detection to help women protect their health.  ABC 13
  • Highland Hospital held a nursing job fair at Radio Social—a local venue with a bowling alley—where candidates learned about the hospital's work culture and team dynamics. Nearly 40% of those who attended accepted job offers after engaging with recruiters in the relaxed setting.  WXXI News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, the Buffalo Bills will face the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium at 7:15 p.m. on ESPN. Local viewers in Rochester can tune in on Spectrum channel 24.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • The Section 5 Wrestling Officials Association will start certification classes on October 15 for men and women who want to become wrestling officials.
