COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, Oct. 10, community members received hands-on emergency training through the Stop the Bleed course and joined a discussion on mental and physical health at Lorretta Johnson Middle School. Free backpacks, wellness kits, and Walmart gift cards were given to early attendees while supplies lasted—cohosted by Monroe County Family Coalition and the Rochester African American Firearms Association.  Spectrum News
  • Community activists gathered outside Senator Cooney's office on Saturday, Oct. 11 to push local leaders to support the MELT Act—a bill that would ban face masks for law enforcement officers. Critics argued the change could remove an important layer of protection for officers and their families.  ABC 13
  • The 16th annual Canstruction Rochester design-build contest will start Saturday at The Strong National Museum of Play where thirteen local teams will build large sculptures from canned food for Foodlink—using the 'Cosmic Conquest: Rise of the Cans' theme. The sculptures will be on display through October 25—giving visitors time to vote for the People’s Choice Award.  ABC 13
  • Kenneth Green and his family of four have been living in temporary shelters since a rent hike on August 18th forced them to leave their apartment that cost $875 a month. He said the shelter will kick them out in five days — he relies on limited county help while he searches for more affordable housing.  News 10
  • The Rochester Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrated its 60th anniversary at East High School on Saturday with a community event that included Zumba, blood pressure screenings, a women's health panel, and hands-only CPR training—part of a month-long series of service activities. The event underscored the chapter’s focus on service, scholarship, sisterhood, and social action in the community.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Top New York entrepreneurs will pitch their innovative products at the FuzeHub Commercialization Competition at the Innovation Summit in Rochester on October 29—30. Among the 12 finalists, a local doctor is testing a new surgical tool to improve women’s health during hysterectomies and will compete for $410,000 and market support.  Spectrum News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday at 7 p.m. until Tuesday at 6 a.m., lanes on I-490 west of Innovative Field will be closed for bridge maintenance — drivers must take the detour using Plymouth Avenue and Brown Street. On Tuesday from 7 p.m. until Wednesday at 6 a.m., closures on I-490 east and at Exit 13 will likely cause travel delays.  News 10
  • New York partners with GoGoGrandparent to offer free and discounted rides to seniors across 30 counties. The service uses Lyft and Uber drivers to help older residents get to medical appointments and errands—supporting their health and independence.  Spectrum News
  • Today, the New York State Division of Consumer Protection warned New Yorkers that rising event ticket prices make it easier for scammers to trick buyers. Officials urged consumers to only buy tickets from official sources and to use credit cards for added fraud protection—reminding everyone to be alert when extra fees or suspiciously low prices appear.  Spectrum News

  • A study by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and upstate schools found alarming contents in vaping devices—prompting Dr. Andrew Hyland on Spectrum News 1 to explain how the new DropTheVape texting program will help young users learn about vaping risks and access the NYS Quitline.  Spectrum News
