COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A one-day count by Partners Ending Homelessness found 1,194 people homeless in Monroe County, a 13% rise from 1,056 last year, and officials said more people are living in encampments & cars across the area.  ABC 13
  • On Friday, local groups marked World Homelessness Day by offering help and resources to people in need. House of Mercy held a resource table from 2 to 4 p.m.—and the Open Door Mission ran a 24-hour livestream that shared local voices and allowed viewers to submit questions or prayer requests.  News 10
  • Herrema’s Food Market and American Dairy Association teamed up Friday for the Fill a Glass with Hope program that let customers add a donation at checkout—raising over $400 to provide much-needed dairy donations to the Irondequoit Community Cupboard.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Goodwill cut the ribbon on a new store in East Rochester on Friday morning (825 Fairport Road) where the first 100 shoppers aged 16 and older received a $10 gift card. The store opened at 9 a.m. and offers a mix of second-hand and new items with sales proceeds going to local projects (988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, Goodwill Learning Academy, Goodwill Vision Enterprises, and Good Neighbor Program).  News 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • New York City hard rock band Black Satellite will perform on Oct. 15 at Anthology opening for MushroomHead with special guests Psychostick and Mind Incision. The show follows the release of their 15-track album Aftermath, which explores themes of rebuilding after hardship.  Rochester Beacon
  • The Eastman School of Music will host the Soundtrax Festival next weekend featuring top film, TV and video game composers — along with live-to-picture concerts where the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Alexandre Desplat’s score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.  Rochester Beacon

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rochester students attended an all-day career and education fair at Blue Cross Arena on Oct. 9, where they met representatives from over 100 colleges, universities and local businesses plus explored vocational paths in manufacturing, construction and transportation. Uniting and Healing Through Hope of Monroe County organized the event to help students discover future career and education opportunities.  ABC 13
  • On Friday, NTID inaugurated Dr. Caroline Solomon as its first woman president, marking a historic moment at the college. The deaf scholar with a background in marine biology and environmental science is honored for boosting research and career opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing students—she developed a database of science terms in American Sign Language.  News 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A thin layer of leaves on your yard gives insects like moths and butterflies a safe home — a RIT professor said it helps protect pollinators and keeps grass in good shape— while Monroe County recycles yard waste to boost natural mulch.  Democrat & Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Bill Valenti stepped down as chief of innovation and staff physician at Trillium Health after more than 40 years of leading HIV care, and he said he is not retiring. He will continue to support better HIV services—his long career has set a high standard for treatment in our community.  WXXI News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Announcer Don Stevens reflected on his career during his final Amerks season at the Blue Cross Arena home opener on Oct. 10—when the team celebrated its 70th anniversary—before he retired.  ABC 13
  • Ernie Clement, a Blue Jays utility player, received strong hometown support in Brighton after his team beat the Yankees 5-2 in Game 4. Local leaders and a former teacher cheered him on—hoping his play helps guide the team to the World Series.  News 10
