CULTURE NEWS

  • Today Fashion Week of Rochester returns at the Convention Center to celebrate community and creativity — co-producer Meghan Mundy, designer Faheem Swanko and Swanko Smoothy lead the event running from Oct. 9 to 11 to support a charitable cause.  ABC 13
  • On the anniversary of Oct. 7, local leaders note a rise in hate as the Anti-Defamation League reported 9,354 antisemitic incidents in 2024—New York had the highest rate in the nation due to its large Jewish community; the report comes two years after Hamas attacked Israel.  Spectrum News
  • Lincoln Hill Farms has turned its grounds into a spooky paradise for HalloweenFest, which runs on weekends in October. The event takes place from 5 to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sundays — offering haunted fun for visitors.  ABC 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monroe Community College invested over $3 million on Tuesday, Oct. 7 to strengthen the nation’s first associate degree Optical Systems Technology program. The college also renamed its 110,000-square-foot facility the Sydor Optics Advanced Technology Center—set to open Fall 2026 with hands-on training in optical systems, renewable energy, and precision tooling.  ABC 13
  • RIT students are set to gather for a car show on campus as the RIT Car Club will host its annual Fall Motor Show on Saturday — local reporter Chris Lopez visited earlier to review the vehicles.  ABC 13
  • The state teachers union is suing the Rochester City School District for failing to pay over 1,000 employees correctly after the July 1 switch to the Oracle system. Union president Adam Urbanski said the lawsuit will seek an injunction for missed and incorrect pay—as union attorneys and state officials push for a new payroll vendor.  News 10
  • Rochester City School District Superintendent Eric Jay Rosser has focused on increasing attendance by working with health providers to expand school clinics and ease appointment conflicts that keep students out of class—chronic absenteeism remains a major challenge this school year. He will mark his 100th day today with an address at East High School and aims to raise elementary attendance to 95% and secondary attendance to 90—92%.  WXXI News
  • Today, Uniting and Healing Through Hope of Monroe County is hosting a college and job fair at Blue Cross Arena from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Rochester—colleges, universities, vocational schools and local employers will offer career and education opportunities.  News 10
  • On October 8th, 2025, RCSD Superintendent Eric Jay Rosser spoke on Connections with Evan Dawson about his vision for the district — sharing his plans to improve student outcomes since starting on July 1. Public health leaders also explained steps communities can take to prevent a rise in tick-borne illnesses.  WXXI News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials say the current drought has raised wildfire risks in New York due to warm, dry weather drying out leaves and branches—fuel for fires. The state has imposed a temporary burn ban from Oct.2 to Oct.15 while allowing small contained fires under four feet wide.  Spectrum News
  • A viewer asked News10NBC’s Emily Putnam about large black spots on maple trees, and Monroe County’s Horticulture Superintendent Mark Quinn said the marks are tar spots (a fungal disease common on Norway maples and sycamore trees in early fall) that will not harm the trees.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rochester City Council will vote on October 21 to approve a $1.1 million loan for Robert Cain’s Hotel Cadillac project, which will turn the 1915 building into 42 affordable apartments with a community room, laundry, artist studio, and free high-speed internet. Construction will begin early 2026, take about 16 months, and 13 units will offer support services for young adults in need—aiming to revitalize a long-decayed landmark.  WXXI News
  • City officials from the Office of Management and Budget held a public outreach event Tuesday night at the Westside Farmers Market where residents shared their budget priorities. They will host more sessions on October 18 at the Dewey Avenue Fire House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on October 25 at the Rochester Public Market from 8:30 to 11 a.m. with an online survey open until November 10.  Spectrum News

  • Section V football week 6 starts today with three games at 6 and 7 p.m. in Greece, Lyons/Sodus, and Attica — additional contests are scheduled Friday and Saturday as coaches are asked to email scores after games.  Democrat & Chronicle
