- ➤ A new Starbucks has opened in downtown Rochester in the remodeled lobby of the Five Star Bank Plaza at 100 Chestnut St.—It is near Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Square Park and operates Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.—Weekend hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Democrat & Chronicle

- ➤ Bestselling author Mitch Albom discussed his new book, Twice—a love story about a second chance—during a Zoom session with ARC Rochester on October 7; he explained the book is selected as GMA's book club pick. ABC 13
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport had its busiest summer in over 15 years with 371,775 departing passengers and August setting a record since the 1990s. Airlines added non-stop routes to Raleigh/Durham, Nashville, Wilmington, Lakeland and Charleston — next year service will include Fort Myers and Sarasota. Democrat & Chronicle

- ➤ Students from over 50 schools visited the 4th annual ROC With Your Hands career event on Tuesday at the Rochester Community Sports Complex—where they learned about jobs in advanced manufacturing and automotive technology. The event gave them hands-on experience with local growing fields. ABC 13
- ➤ Monroe Community College announced Tuesday a more than $3 million investment that strengthened the nation’s first optical systems technology associate degree program—naming its new Sydor Optics Advanced Technology Center, which will open next fall to offer hands-on training in optical systems technology, renewable energy and precision tooling in Rochester. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists from SUNY and volunteers recently flew over Canandaigua Lake using an airplane equipped with a hyperspectral sensor and a drone to collect data on water clarity and chlorophyll A. They will use the information to build an AI model that will predict harmful algal blooms—68 blooms have already been reported this season. Democrat & Chronicle

- ➤ RASE marked its five-year anniversary on Monday at the Rochester Education Opportunity Center and shared its work on reducing high-stakes testing, improving housing, and creating job opportunities in the area—efforts that fight racism and inequality. The commission said it prepared for changes in federal funding to keep its programs strong for the community. ABC 13
- ➤ Today, the City of Rochester has launched National Voter Education Week in partnership with the Monroe County Board of Elections to help residents register to vote, locate polling sites, and plan their voting process. Pop-up registration tables are available at R-Centers (David F. Gantt, Frederick Douglass, and Pamela and Trenton Jackson), the Rochester Community Sports Complex, and Rochester Animal Services through Friday, Oct. 10, with the voter registration deadline on Oct. 25. - ➤ New York is shifting its Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program from 600 fiscal intermediaries to one statewide intermediary to cut costs and simplify care for seniors and people with disabilities.
