COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new women’s shelter for teen mothers opened today in Rochester, offering counseling, services and resources to help residents transition to independent living—founded by Barbara Thomas and run by Victorious Living Housing, the facility accommodates five and reflects a commitment to nurturing support.  Spectrum News
  • Local volunteers and nonprofit staff built the new playground at the Ryan R-Center on Webster Avenue in Beechwood last Friday—using community input to add features like three slides, swings, climbing areas, and an ASL panel. The project involved Healthi Kids, KABOOM!, the city, and sponsor Sierra, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked its completion.  WXXI News

  • Today, Firewatch Farm Co. owner Amanda Dufrane joined the Red Hen app to connect Rochester residents with fresh offerings from her Ontario farm as local farms wrestle with rising costs and competition from big stores. She said the digital switch overcomes the long search for available products and is part of her mission to feed neighbors and preserve farmland—efforts that bolster the local economy.  Spectrum News
  • Goodwill of the Finger Lakes will open a new store in East Rochester on Oct. 10 in the former Big Lots space in Country Club Plaza — anchored by Wegmans at the corner of Route 31F and Marsh Road. The 28,175-square-foot store will sell a mix of gently used and new items while the first 100 shoppers 16 and older receive a $10 gift card and the organization hires 40 new employees.  Democrat & Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eastman Museum will host several horror and supernatural-themed film screenings at the Dryden Theatre as part of its Halloween at the Dryden series — screenings include The Others on October 15, Queen of Spades on October 21, The Dead Zone on October 23, Cat People on October 25 at 2 p.m., The Lost Boys later on October 25, The Phantom of the Opera on October 30 and Sorry to Bother You on October 31, with most films starting at 7:30 p.m.  ABC 13
  • Last week, Eastman honored Shostakovich's 50th death anniversary with student and faculty concerts that played his Symphony No. 5 along with Ravel’s song cycle—showing a mix of strong and soft tunes. Conductor Brad Lubman led the orchestra to keep the sound even as the music moved from loud to quiet.  Campus Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • United Farm Workers have urged Wafler Farms in Wayne County to follow a contract set by an arbitrator that would raise pay and protect 110 temporary workers on H2A visas—ensuring fair treatment during apple picking on 600 acres. The union said workers face long hard days in unsafe conditions—risks that may force them to leave without work at season's end.  Rochester Beacon

  • Yesterday, the Commission on Racial and Structural Equity marked its fifth anniversary at the Rochester Educational Opportunity Center—reviewing progress in education, housing, and economic equity while planning to replace high-stakes testing and strengthen tenant protections. SPORTS NEWS

  • Section V is taking votes for the Faber Builders Boys Sports Athlete of the Week for September 29–October 5 with the poll open until 8 p.m. Wednesday—nominees include standout athletes from soccer, cross country, volleyball, and golf, and the winner will be named Thursday morning on Instagram.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • After the Patriots won 23-20 at Highmark Stadium, former Bills player Diggs and Bills quarterback Allen shared a warm hug—exchanging I love you's that showed respect between them. The win broke Buffalo’s long home streak and recalled Diggs’ ties to his old team.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Sports reporters have chosen athletes for the Section V football contest from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5, and votes are open until 8 p.m. Wednesday + the winner will be announced on Instagram Thursday.  Democrat & Chronicle
