ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists from the New York Natural Heritage Program are finishing the final year of a state survey that studies the decline of firefly species in New York as many have become rare. • State officials issued a burn ban that began on Oct. 2 and will remain in effect until Oct. 15 because dry conditions have raised fire risk statewide — the ban restricts outdoor burns for brush and debris disposal while exempting small campfires. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal magistrate judge found New York State had illegally operated about three miles of the Thruway on Seneca lands because the easement made in the 1950s lacked federal approval—forcing the state to negotiate a new valid easement if the report is adopted. • City officials say water has been leaking into suites, the press box and restrooms at the Rochester Community Sports Complex stadium for years—damaging finishes and forcing some luxury boxes to stay closed.
