COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Local volunteers, along with the City of Rochester, Healthi Kids Coalition and KABOOM!, built a new playground in one day at Thomas Ryan Recreation Center on Webster Avenue; crews began work at 8:30 a.m. Friday and finished by 2:30 p.m. Friday. The design, influenced by local children’s input, will open on Monday — the concrete needs time to dry. News 10
- ➤ 109 youth soccer teams gathered at Davis Park in Chili as part of the annual Pink the Field tournament to raise over $20,000 for breast cancer research — organizers Erin Noll and Amy Wood, who have held the event for 12 years, partnered with Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester and featured raffle baskets and food vendors to support the cause. - ➤ Victorious Living Housing hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 4 to open Gladys' House — a new space on Post Avenue that supports homeless mothers aged 16 to 25. - ➤ Local lawmakers on Friday honored Rochester Accessible Adventures with a proclamation at Irondequoit Public Library—recognizing its ten years of service in offering recreation, adaptive sports and tourism services for people with disabilities. - ➤ A two-alarm fire heavily damaged a home on Redman Road in Clarkson last night—residents and most pets escaped safely and one person was treated for smoke inhalation while investigators work to determine the cause and the American Red Cross assists the displaced. ABC 13

- ➤ Happy Earth Tea in South Wedge faced supply issues after federal tax changes on foreign goods disrupted shipments, including a $4,000 tea order from Japan. Owner Mary Boland said new customs regulations led to lost packages and higher shipping costs—pressuring the business to manage rising costs without passing them on to customers. ABC 13
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Rochester unveiled its new look Friday and is now called URochester—its blue and gold colors remain and its crest was simplified after 20 years of feedback from students, faculty, staff and alumni. The brand refresh comes as the school celebrates its 175th anniversary. News 10
- ➤ Many Rochester teachers remain unpaid because of problems with the Oracle payroll system—nearly 200 staff, including substitutes, missed wages from pay periods on 9/05, 9/19, and 10/3. Board Commissioner James Patterson said he warned years ago and now calls for an independent audit—hoping that taxpayer dollars will be directed toward classroom needs. News 10

- ➤ Many areas have banned or set limits on gas-powered leaf blowers because they pollute the air, make too much noise and harm health—New York lawmakers are asking Gov. - ➤ On Saturday morning, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention held its annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk at Veterans Memorial Park in Penfield — the event raised awareness about suicide prevention and funded research, education, advocacy, and support programs. ABC 13
- ➤ On Saturday, the Hilton girls soccer team raised funds for breast cancer awareness during their game against Penfield by walking the track before play and donating a check to the Breast Cancer Coalition — a group that helped coach Pam Stadtmiller during her treatment. News 10

- ➤ The Buffalo Bills will debut their Cold Front jerseys today at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park as clear skies and seasonably warm weather are expected, with temperatures in the upper 60s moving to the lower 60s by game end.
