CRIME NEWS

  • Political activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated on a college campus in Rochester in front of many students, a tragedy that sparked heated social media reactions ranging from prayers for his family to celebrations of his death — legal experts and college officials warned that free speech may face new limits as those posting harmful messages could face consequences.  Spectrum News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Seneca Chief began its bicentennial voyage Saturday by sailing from Buffalo to New York City to mark 200 years of the Erie Canal. The boat will stop at 28 ports along the canal—offering free educational programs and planting Eastern White Pine trees to honor indigenous communities.  ABC 13
  • Stan Munro of Toothpick World is building a replica of the original Highmark Stadium using toothpicks to honor its final season after more than 50 years. The sculpture will be displayed at the Lord & Taylor wing of Eastview Mall in a few weeks — a tribute to his long-standing passion for art.  Spectrum News
  • On Friday, the city of Rochester unveiled a historical marker honoring the Pythodd Room near Troup and Clarissa Streets in the historic Corn Hill neighborhood — a site that played a pivotal role in shaping the local jazz scene. City officials said the marker recognizes its influence on music history by recalling performances from artists like Bill Easley and Chuck Mangione.  News 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rochester high school students will attend the HBCU College Expo at Blue Cross Arena where representatives from 25 HBCUs, alumni and Divine Nine members will help around 800 students fill out college and scholarship applications—organized by the National College Resource Foundation.  Spectrum News
  • On Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, Rochester hosted its second annual HBCU Classic Football Game at the Community Sports Complex with Central State University and Lane College playing, and Mayor Malik Evans noted the event's role in sparking local interest in college opportunities+ a college fair at Blue Cross Arena gave high school students a chance to learn about admissions and scholarships.  ABC 13
  • Rochester Prep dedicated a library at Jay Campus Elementary School to honor teacher Jaimie Magee Lesnick (age 30) who passed away from ovarian cancer in September 2020 after seven years teaching fourth grade. Family members and staff gathered today as her family's nonprofit (Jaimie's Bridge) donated funds that give $20,000 annually in scholarships to graduating seniors.  News 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At Seneca Park Zoo, a sustainable wine tasting benefit was held on Sept. 26 featuring over 50 eco-friendly wines—teaching visitors about green winemaking and supporting local and global conservation efforts—while proceeds will support education and conservation initiatives in the Finger Lakes and beyond.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • New York officials said Medicaid and ACA plans will continue during the looming federal shutdown — however, hospitals face payment delays and may lose telehealth services if pandemic rules expire.   • Messiah Hampton from Monroe broke the Section V career receiving yards record—reaching 2,300 yards—and became the league's all-time leader while discussing his team's strong start.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • In Friday’s Section V football games, Churchville-Chili’s running back Jayden Jager ran for 220 yards and scored four touchdowns as his team won a tight 43—36 contest over Canandaigua—other players had standout performances in key matchups.  Democrat & Chronicle
