  • BEE A Hero Day is underway to support Ronald McDonald House Charities, which offers free housing and meals for families near Golisano Children’s Hospital—volunteers and staff work to make a real difference today—donations can be made by calling or texting the provided numbers.  News 10
  • Shanticia Nelson and Kayon Carter lost their 1-year-old daughter after a wellness check and now face eviction after they stopped paying rent due to health hazards and disrepair in their home—forcing the family to search for a safer place to live.  Democrat & Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mayor Malik D. Evans and local leaders unveiled a historic marker today honoring the Pythodd Room—a once-famous jazz club at Clarissa and Troup streets in Corn Hill. Bill Easley and other musicians performed in tribute to the club's legacy and its key role in shaping local jazz history.  City of Rochester
  • Novelist Nishant Batsha held his new novel launch event at Gell creative retreat in Bristol Hills yesterday—he read from A Bomb Placed Close to the Heart during a brief reading and wine tasting session.   • Tenor Mark Padmore and pianist Paul Lewis will perform an all-Schumann recital at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept 28 in Kilbourn Hall at Eastman School of Music—followed by free master classes at 6:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall and 8 p.m. in Hatch Recital Hall.  Rochester Beacon

ECONOMY NEWS

  • RG&E said that electricity demand in Rochester increased 83% from 2022 to 2025 and that it will request a rate hike from state regulators next week to fund grid upgrades—residential and small business users are affected as the utility ties together substations in southwest Henrietta. The company plans to expand its aging infrastructure with a $5.1 billion capital project that awaits state review.  News 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the DEC announced that Free Fishing Day lets residents aged 16 and older fish without a license while still following all standard fishing rules— the event coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, with the last Free Fishing Day scheduled for November 11.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Executive Adam Bello announced a new program with Community Broadband Networks to bring high-speed internet to underserved Rochester neighborhoods, and eligible households will get at least 100 Mbps, two free months and five years of service for $30 per month—with free in-home installation and a Wi-Fi router.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Monroe County has a new district attorney in Irondequoit Town Justice Brian Green—appointed by Governor Hochul—who will finish former DA Sandra Doorley's term after she stepped down last month following a review of her encounter with a Webster police officer.   • New York State mailed inflation refund checks to over 8.2 million eligible residents on Friday to help offset higher sales taxes based on 2023 tax returns — the one-time checks vary by income and filing status.   • Monroe Avenue between Shepard and Rosedale reopened to traffic after nearly two weeks of repairs following a water main break — water quality was not compromised — as the city continues phased reconstruction and advises drivers to follow detour signs.  ABC 13

  • Nurse Caroline Bamburoski cared for young patient Maddie Rollins at Golisano Children’s Hospital while treating her NEC condition, and over years of surgeries their bond grew so strong that Maddie served as the flower girl at Bamburoski’s January wedding—showing a connection that went beyond care.  News 10
