- ➤ The Mary Cariola Center held its 17th annual Walking on Sunshine event at Penfield Veterans' Memorial Park on Sunday—its largest fundraiser that supports people with medical needs and intellectual disabilities in Rochester. The event featured a walk, an activity tent, a raffle and food, and it has been a local tradition for over 70 years. News 10
- ➤ Monroe County announced on Monday a partnership with Community Broadband Networks to bring affordable high-speed internet to low-income households in Rochester. The program provides a 100 Mbps package with two months free—ongoing service for $30 per month over five years with free installation and a router. ABC 13
- ➤ Figgy Studio & Shop will host its third annual Paws for Cause fundraiser on Sept 27 from 11 to 5 — proceeds will benefit four local rescue organizations. The event will support local pet rescues in Rochester. ABC 13
- ➤ At a Bills game on Thursday, Sept. 22, 68-year-old Brian Dodge collapsed from a heart issue at Highmark Stadium—nurse Danielle Johnson and fellow fans rushed to help, and he is now at Rochester General Hospital for pacemaker surgery. ABC 13
- ➤ Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester will double its fundraising goal for BEE A Hero Day on Sept. 26 by aiming to raise $100,000 with support from News10NBC & 92.5 WBEE to help families with critically ill children. News 10
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Hill Cumorah Historic Site reopened its visitors center on May 21 with new interactive exhibits, a film, artwork, and three new statues that tell the Book of Mormon story—an upgrade after the Hill Cumorah Pageant ended in 2019. Visitors can now walk the new trails on the hill and enjoy quiet spaces for reflection. Democrat & Chronicle
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University launched UR Essentials this Fall to give full-time undergraduates free access to required textbooks—helping lower costs and simplify course preparation, though some students experienced delays when materials arrived late or missed faculty submissions. - ➤ The Munger Lab at the University of Rochester’s Medical Center is researching HCMV, a virus that can cause birth defects and serious illness in people with weak immune systems. The lab, led by Joshua Munger, also trains graduate students to plan experiments and develop better treatments—focusing on how viruses interact with human cells. Campus Times
- ➤ Crews raised the final metal beam in Strong Memorial Hospital’s nine-story patient tower on Monday morning, completing the frame for work on an expanded emergency department and over 100 private patient rooms (which will triple the size of the emergency department) west of the main entrance on Elmwood Avenue; the full project is set to finish by early 2027.
