COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today marks 24 years since the 9/11 attacks and Rochester firefighters held remembrance events that included stair climbs and a remembrance run to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost. Firefighters stressed that improvements in incident command and communication have shaped how they prepare for future emergencies—ensuring the legacy of that day endures.  News 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters from Brighton and nearby departments battled a fire at Brownstein's Bagel Bakery near Twelve Corners on Tuesday, Sept. 9 — the nearly 40-year-old building was destroyed after eight hours of effort while officials have yet to determine the cause and no one was hurt.  WXXI News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wegmans Food Markets was named the number one retailer to work for in America for the 10th year based on feedback from 87,000 employees — with high ratings for service and community support — and the company will celebrate with free mini cupcakes and Clementine tangerines at 11 a.m. September 13.  Democrat & Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum will reopen on Sept. 30 after three months of repairs from flooding that washed out parts of its railroad track — it will also launch a historic market at Industry Depot.  ABC 13
  • Today the 14th annual Rochester Fringe Festival is underway through Sept. 20 and offers free events such as movie screenings, comedy shows, trivia, and art displays at venues like Spiegelgarden and Parcel 5—organizers reported 85 free events with 20 at Spiegelgarden over the next week and a half.  News 10
  • The Pirate Toy Fund will mark 30 years by hosting a free Kidz ROC the Boat concert for children on Sept. 13 at Blue Cross Arena and a gala on Oct. 4 at the Italian American Community Center that will feature live music and a raffle for a Corvette. Founded with the help of Christie, the nonprofit has given over 500,000 toys to Rochester children and will continue its work to support those in need.  Democrat & Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • RIT invites students and the community to use flashlights to paint with light at Highmark Stadium on Oct. 11 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.—a project that will capture the site before its farewell season and later be shown in the Bills’ new stadium.  News 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New York State’s fall foliage report has begun tracking weekly leaf changes, and early shifts have been seen in the Adirondack and capital regions—peak colors will reach by October 9. The report adds that changes in the Catskills, Finger Lakes, and upper Hudson Valley will follow soon while Long Island lags.  NewsRadio WHAM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monroe County Executive Adam Bello filed an official complaint with the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct against City Court Judge Michael Lopez after he reversed CAP judges' decisions in morning arraignments—retired Judge Patricia Marks and Attorney Vincent Merante said ethical corrective measures may follow if violations are confirmed.  ABC 13
  • Teachers and staff in RCSD continue to face payroll problems after the district switched from PeopleSoft to Oracle on July 2 — issues like late or incorrect pay and penalties have unsettled workers who met with Superintendent Dr. Eric Jay Rosser over the summer. They received their regular pay on Sept. 5 and union officials say any extra payment issues will be resolved by Sept. 19 or state officials may get involved.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Legislator Rachel Barnhart addressed a protest after federal agents tried to seize immigrant workers at a home on Park Avenue in Rochester and clashed with protesters on Tuesday—while a Border Patrol vehicle with flattened tires was seen leaving a home on Westminster Rd. The incident reflects ongoing concerns about federal enforcement in the area.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Four major Rochester pharmacies are setting different rules for fall COVID shots—Wegmans still needs a doctor's prescription while CVS, Walgreens, and Tops do not. Gov. Hochul’s order now lets pharmacists give shots based on varying age and risk guidelines.  Democrat & Chronicle

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Several food and drink events are scheduled this fall in the Rochester area—guests can enjoy cider tastings, themed family brunches, Oktoberfest celebrations and more at venues like Radio Social, Casa Larga Vineyards and the Rochester Public Market from Sept. 13 to Oct. 10. SPORTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Sept. 10 the Rochester Red Wings unveiled custom jerseys at Innovative Field in partnership with the Rochester School for the Deaf and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf — the game will take place this Friday with a silent inning, signed performances of God Bless America and interpreters in the stadium.  ABC 13
