  • The Midlakes Aquatic Center is back open today for school and community use with a celebration starting at 5 p.m. The Phelps-Clifton Springs Central School District will mark the reopening as Superintendent Ganster speaks and the girls swim team hosts Livonia to begin their season.  Democrat & Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • After nearly six years of legal battle, a court approved a $246 million bankruptcy settlement that will provide payments to hundreds of abuse survivors from the Rochester diocese—while Bishop Matano apologized in court—acknowledging that the compensation cannot undo their past harm.  Rochester Beacon
  • Rochester Police recovered two guns after following a motorized scooter rider who refused to stop Monday morning near Bay and Cumming streets—officers chased him to a Clifford Avenue home where they arrested him and a 40-year-old man and charged both with criminal possession of a weapon.  News 10
  • Taquida Hendrix, 31, faced trial for murder and arson after police said she started a 2024 house fire on Portland Avenue that killed 5-year-old Malakai Stovall—her sister and another defendant pleaded guilty to arson and agreed to testify about the alleged retaliation behind the blaze.  ABC 13
  • Two Rochester men were charged with criminal possession of a weapon after police stopped a 37-year-old man riding an unlawful motorized scooter near Clifford Avenue on Monday morning and later discovered him and a second man in a residence with firearms — a handgun and AR-style pistol.  ABC 13
  • Police arrested two Rochester men after a 37-year-old man led a scooter chase that started at Bay and Cummings streets around 2 a.m. today and ended at a Clifford Avenue home — where officers recovered an AR-style rifle and a handgun — in the incident.  NewsRadio WHAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rochester has a new Night Market that began on Sept. 2 at the Exchange open air venue on Flint Street and drew over 200 people who enjoyed music, food and shopping with more than 50 local vendors. Organizer Lex Page said the event—modeled after a market in Bangkok—expanded from an initial plan for 15 businesses to 80 and will run every other Tuesday until Oct. 28 while exploring options for winter events.  Democrat & Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University has closed Hoeing Hall for renovations, updating bathrooms to match Genesee Hall—its work will also improve lounges and Wi-Fi. Renovation work will begin September 15 and finish before the Class of 2030 moves in.  Campus Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Town of Victor held a public meeting to plan a new fire protection district after the Fishers Fire District, which covers a 26-square-mile area (Eastview Mall and parts of the Thruway), was set to dissolve. Local fire agencies, including Victor Fire District and Bushnell’s Basin, will sign agreements by mid-September to provide emergency coverage before Fishers officially dissolves on Oct. 1.  News 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • A resident of Waterview Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center was taken to the hospital after an overdose of Depakote caused encephalopathy, and his family now plans to move him to a new facility while urging health officials to investigate the error—doctors say his condition is slowly improving.  News 10
