CRIME NEWS

  • A U-Haul truck crashed into the Erie Canal after two men stole items from a Brockport Walgreens and sped away, leading to a police chase in which one suspect died after struggling under the water while the other was arrested—officials have not identified the deceased.  NewsRadio WHAM
  • Rochester police found a 20-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her lower body on Hollister Street off Clifford Avenue around 11 p.m. today—she was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital—while police ask anyone with information to call 911.  News 10
  • Rochester Police arrested 23-year-old Lazareth Unzueta on Fairbanks Street Monday after they responded to a family trouble report and found a backpack with about 200 rounds and an Anderson Manufacturing pistol—he now faces charges for harassment and weapon possession and was previously involved in a November shooting.  News 10
  • Governor Kathy Hochul launched New York’s largest crackdown on illegal vaping products on September 2, resulting in over a dozen arrests and 38 charges — state police and the health department targeted online shipments to keep flavored vapes from youth.  NewsRadio WHAM

CULTURE NEWS

  • RIT has expanded its downtown art space near the Strong Museum of Play by opening a free venue run by its College of Art and Design — the space hosts exhibitions, student projects, faculty work, and community collaborations while offering educational programming throughout the year.  ABC 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wednesday marked the first day of classes in several districts including Penfield, where parents at Aquinas Institute and Cobbles Elementary said they appreciated free school supplies and meal programs while voicing worries about keeping students safe — they hoped these measures would ensure a secure school year.  News 10
  • Spencerport Central School District has installed stop arm cameras on school buses that will photograph vehicles passing when the bus is stopped—violators will receive a 30-day warning before fines of $250 begin on Oct. 6. The system is funded by fines so taxpayers are not charged.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Malik D. Evans joined Ibero-American Development Corporation to celebrate the completion of the Pueblo Nuevo Group Street Rehabilitation Project in CONEA, which rebuilt streets and added 104 affordable housing units. Key upgrades included sidewalk replacement, water and drainage improvements, and green space restoration + the project is part of the city’s broader plan to revitalize local neighborhoods.  City of Rochester
  • Yesterday, Foodlink leaders warned that nearly 2.5 million Americans could lose SNAP benefits from the recently passed federal budget, with older adults and veterans hit hardest. The report also noted concerns about global democracy backsliding and challenges to the federal civil service—issues that will shape upcoming policy debates.  WXXI News
  • Mayor Evans today outlined a safety plan for Rochester’s children returning to school that includes a fall installation of automated school bus cameras and City R-Centers offering extended after-school programs with dinner provided starting Sept. 8—his plan also calls for school-based counseling and road improvements to support safer travel under the ROC Vision Zero Initiative.  City of Rochester
