EDUCATION NEWS

  • Richard Handler, a University alumnus and former CEO, is retiring from his job as chair of the Board of Trustees after seven years—he gave the University a $25 million fund that covers tuition, housing, and more for select students. The Board will choose a new chair this fall.  Campus Times
  • The Rochester City School District is holding a hearing today at 4:30 p.m. at the James Monroe High School student orientation to discuss the school's receivership and plans for improved performance—officials will also gather public feedback during the series of hearings—.  News 10
  • The University of Rochester will set up a $3.5 million fund to pay about $226 on average to each of the 9,982 students who paid for in-person classes in 2020 but took online courses due to the pandemic—this settlement follows a lawsuit claiming the school failed to deliver extra out-of-class work and will be decided at a final hearing in downtown Rochester on November 13 at 10:00 a.m.  Campus Times

  • Dr. Elizabeth Murray from Golisano Children's Hospital said on Monday, September 1 that reduced vaccine access in the United States means Rochester residents should prepare for flu season—she encouraged getting vaccinated for better protection.  ABC 13

  • Rochester residents and students can use a new guide of local cafes near the Orange and Red shuttle lines to find affordable spots for studying, meeting friends and enjoying a snack—each venue lists its hours, location and menu picks for a reliable outing.
