CRIME NEWS

  • A man in his 40s from Webster was arrested on Aug. 25 in connection with a significant drug seizure in Greece after police recovered about 50 pounds of marijuana and 5 pounds of hallucinogenic mushrooms from a home on Laurelwood Drive on Aug. 24, and police continue to investigate the case.  News 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • The George Eastman Museum opened a sustainability exhibit Aug. 26 and it will run until Nov. 9; the show explains how the museum uses LED lights and reused frames to protect its old items. Visitors learn how careful artifact care is combined with energy saving — a method that cuts waste and lowers power use.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Yesterday in Ogden, the Bicentennial Jam on the Canal festival celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal and the Homesteads for Hope farmhouse—proceeds supported the nonprofit's work to expand opportunities for all while highlighting the canal’s role in shaping trade and travel.  ABC 13
  • Rochester held its second annual How We Roc photography show on Friday night to celebrate five local artists—each gaining a full year of media access, a Link Gallery exhibit, and a $1,500 stipend. The photos are on display at City Hall’s Link Gallery from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  News 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. John Fisher University welcomed one of its largest and most diverse classes—645 students from 24 states arrived on campus Aug. 30—while the university will hold a matriculation ceremony on Tuesday as weekend workshops and seminars begin their academic journey.  ABC 13
  • SweetLady Daycare Inc. held its annual back-to-school giveaway at Loretta Scott Middle School in Rochester Saturday—students received essential supplies like book bags, notebooks, rulers, crayons, and scissors while enjoying food and entertainment from noon to 5 p.m. Special guests included Reentry Community President Miquel Powell, Commissioner of Education Isaiah Santiago, and Jessica Privitera from the Rochester Recreation Center—marking the event as a strong community effort.  News 10
  • Universities and community colleges in SUNY have banned single-use balloons for events this school year to cut plastic waste and protect animals—campuses will now use reusable options with some exceptions for research needs.  WXXI News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a board meeting on Aug. 28, the school district discussed ongoing payroll issues affecting over 1,000 employees who are owed back pay—Board President Camille Simmons said legal concerns halted plans to outsource payroll as officials work to ensure salaries are paid on Sept. 5.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Delphi Rise runs a 24/7 addiction services clinic on Hinchey Road in Gates that serves about 3000 people at an annual cost of roughly $900K. The current funds (including $405K from state opioid settlement funds lasting until Dec. 31) may run out and force the clinic to reduce hours if new funding is not secured.  ABC 13

  • Section V high school sports scores for the fall season are organized into files for each sport across Rochester, Monroe, Finger Lakes, Wayne, Livingston, Genesee + nearby areas.
