  • Honor Flight Rochester will lead the Monroe County Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 8 at 10:30 a.m. — the parade will start at South Goodman Street and Highland Avenue and proceed to the Greater Rochester Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Gary Beikirch Memorial Park to honor local veterans.  WXXI News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Penfield student pilot, Brian J. Valder, 41, died when his Cessna 152 crashed near Hornell on Aug. 1 shortly before 7 p.m.—witnesses said the plane circled at low altitude with its engine running normally and debris spread about 250 feet as the NTSB continues its preliminary investigation.  Democrat & Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Rochester Police said that on Friday morning a resident fired several shots from a legally-owned handgun at a 34-year-old suspect who broke into his home on Avenue D—residents fought off the intruder and the suspect was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.  News 10
  • In January 2024, Lollypop Farm rescued 45 cats from a Perinton home after the Monroe County Sheriff's Office executed a warrant on Kreag Road—authorities had found unsafe living conditions in a hoarding case and the investigation remains ongoing.  ABC 13
  • 28-year-old Abdi Mohammed pleaded guilty to assault after he shot a man in his 20s at least 10 times on Thanksgiving Day on Exchange Street near Flint Street and robbed him, leaving the victim injured for about 7 hours before a jogger helped — Mohammed will serve 16-and-a-half years in prison.  NewsRadio WHAM
  • A 34-year-old man is in custody after he allegedly forced his way into a north-side home on Avenue D—between Hudson Avenue and Bauman Street—shortly before 5 a.m., and he is now receiving treatment at a hospital for minor injuries after a resident fired several shots with a legally registered gun.  NewsRadio WHAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The RCSD teachers' union filed a grievance with the New York State Department of Labor after around 800 employees — about 100 teachers and 700 support staff — went without pay this summer due to issues with the Oracle payroll system. Union leaders met with Superintendent Dr. Eric Rosser, and the district promised that employees will receive their general paycheck Sept. 5 despite unresolved payment problems.  News 10

  • Greece police completed an active shooter drill at Holmes Road Elementary School on Friday, August 22, with dozens of first responders from police, fire, and EMS practicing rescue and response tactics—preparing for any future threat. The department said additional training will continue today to further enhance school safety.  ABC 13
