  • Today, a McDonald’s in Spencerport is handing out free backpacks filled with school supplies for students from 10AM—12PM at 44 Nichols St. On August 19, McDonald’s in Williamson, Rochester, and Manchester will offer similar free giveaways, with more events planned in Geneva, Waterloor, and Wolcott.  ABC 13
  • People gathered at Parlay’s Inn on Monroe Avenue on August 17 for the 'Pouring with a Purpose' fundraiser—a Bills afternoon featuring trivia, drinks and raffles to support the Rochester Hearing and Speech Center.  ABC 13
  • Silk O’Loughlin’s hosted a fundraiser on Sunday, Aug. 17 in Rochester to support local animal rescues Blue Moon Meadows— a nonprofit that aids rescue efforts, and Brindle Posse Rescue. The event featured live music, drinks and food, with all proceeds going to help these groups.  News 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 15-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool in Greece on Sunday at around 2 p.m.—police and medical crews tried to revive him but he later died at Strong Memorial Hospital, with a medical episode suspected and no evidence of foul play.  News 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Rochester police identified 31-year-old Abagail Perez as the victim fatally stabbed on Spencer Street on August 14th—her former partner, 21-year-old Javier Justice, is charged with second-degree murder and remains hospitalized after sustaining a gunshot wound during the altercation.  Democrat & Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York State Senate Bill S7618, sponsored by Sen. Michelle Hinchey and Assemblymember Karines Reyes, proposes that food packaging use only Best if Used By and Use By labels—this change is meant to reduce food waste and lower methane emissions from landfills. The bill, introduced on April 23, is under review and would take effect on July 1, 2027 if passed.  Democrat & Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • About 50 young athletes gathered at the Champions of Change Summit at Rochester Community Sports Complex this past weekend to discuss access issues in youth soccer. League founder Nicole Hercules said plans include more clinics, new fields, and salaried roles—steps to help local kids play safely and reach their potential.  WXXI News
