- ➤ Melvin Council Jr.—a Kansas Jayhawks guard—returned to Rochester yesterday for his Give Back event at the Boys and Girls Clubs, where he held a free basketball clinic and gave over 70 kids backpacks filled with school supplies. He said his gesture echoed his own childhood struggles with affording camp experiences. ABC 13
- ➤ Open Door Mission's men's shelter on Main Street in Rochester has been housing around 100 people in a space made for 52—this overcrowding has strained its resources for over two years. CEO Anna Valeria said the mission is asking city, county and state agencies for help with healthcare, addiction treatment and mental health services. News 10
- ➤ Pathway's to Peace held the first free peace and cleanup barbecue on Aug. 13, 2025 — community members cleaned local neighborhoods and dined together to help reduce youth violence. Future events will run every Wednesday and Thursday for the next three weeks at set locations including the corners of Hudson Ave and Kosciusko St, Flint St and Jefferson Ave, and the parking lot of 57 St. Paul St. ABC 13

- ➤ Robert Katz, a longtime pilot from Texas, said he was suspicious of the NTSB report on the Aug. 1 Piper J5C plane crash on Bridge View Drive in Maplewood that killed plane owner Thomas Stewart and seriously injured the pilot due to fuel starvation concerns—Katz questioned how both tanks could be empty without a fire. - ➤ A four-alarm fire on Dewey Avenue on Tuesday destroyed an apartment building, leaving families with nearly all their belongings lost while crews demolished the structure and the Red Cross helped find shelter—firefighters continue to investigate the cause. News 10

- ➤ RPD found Luis Leon’s body in Cattaraugus County after he was reported missing on Sunday (body showed blunt injuries) and arrested Ruben Anthony Ortiz (48) Monday in Salamanca on charges of murder and hiding the body. ABC 13
- ➤ Rochester police arrested 48-year-old Ruben Anthony Ortiz from Piffard after he allegedly killed 28-year-old Luis Leon at a home on Indiana Street on Aug. 9 and then drove Leon’s body over 100 miles to dump it along State Route 86 in Salamanca—leading to a court appearance scheduled for Friday. - ➤ Federal authorities charged three Rochester men—Lamarious Bradley, Lucius Bradley and Chad Brown—with mail theft, bank fraud and illegal holding of USPS mailbox keys after a scheme that began in January 2023 stole mail from blue collection boxes in Irondequoit and Brighton and a search at a Brighton apartment uncovered stolen checks and money orders.
