  • ARC Rochester will host the 9th Annual Lee Lucas Memorial Poker Run at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 16 at 290 Salt Road in Webster to raise funds + honor Lee Lucas, who died from a heroin overdose in 2016 as part of efforts against the opioid crisis. His father, Dean Lucas, will join the event to share insights on the memorial run.  ABC 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Leonel Yas Pena, accused of a hit-and-run that killed beloved Salinger’s doorman Henry 'Hank' Brown near Buena Place after leaving a bar on Monroe Avenue while driving drunk in June, was indicted on charges of vehicular manslaughter + leaving the scene.  News 10
  • Rochester Police were still searching for the driver in the hit-and-run that injured a man on Lexington Avenue and Straub Street Saturday night—he was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with a head injury.  News 10
  • Monroe County sheriff's deputies are searching near Glazer Drive in Penfield for Zoe-Mae Baker, a nonverbal 5-year-old with autism who was last seen in her room at 9 p.m. on Sunday (she is 3 feet 6 with long brown hair and bangs) and urge anyone with information to call 911.  News 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Diana Meyer, a Rochester native, was crowned the first Mrs. United States of America based in New Jersey on August 11 — marking a milestone in her pageant journey — after competing in a series of events. She shared details of her journey with local reporters as she celebrated her win.  ABC 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Caroline Solomon will become the first female president of NTID at RIT later this month and will take over from Gerry Buckley, who steps down on August 17. She comes from Gallaudet University with 25 years of experience in education & STEM research and plans to boost opportunities for deaf & hard-of-hearing students in our area.  Rochester Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rochester lost Carlos Carballada — a respected former acting and deputy mayor and local business leader — who died over the weekend at age 90. His funeral will be held Saturday in Buffalo as neighbors remember his many contributions to government and philanthropy.  ABC 13
  • Today the Rochester Housing Authority opened Bond Hamilton Townhouses on Hamilton Street in the South Wedge with six ADA-accessible units. The project, in development since 2019 and federally funded through HUD, is part of an effort that has delivered over 3,000 affordable rental units since 2022—providing housing for families.  News 10
