ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rochester firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire early Sunday morning at 387—393 Cottage Street that damaged both buildings and displaced seven people while the Red Cross assisted five adults and two children.  News 10

  • Toronto-based Li-Cycle Holdings Corp. halted work on an unfinished lithium-ion battery recycling hub at Eastman Business Park after rising costs forced a bankruptcy filing in May. It was acquired by Glencore Canada Corp. on August 7—official plans for the site remain unknown.  Democrat & Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The final day of the 26th Annual St. Dimitria Macedonian Festival was held yesterday in Henrietta as the community celebrated Macedonian heritage and Eastern Orthodox faith with traditional food, beer, wine and sweets alongside a market selling spices, coffee and other delicacies. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders and the Rochester Housing Authority will open six new ADA-accessible affordable homes in the South Wedge today at 10 a.m.—the project began in 2019 as part of an initiative to provide safe, high-quality housing for local families.  News 10
  • RTS riders with disabilities can request modifications to fixed route, paratransit and on demand services to help with daily travel, but changes that alter the service or pose safety risks will be denied, and requests must be made in advance or at the time of travel—riders may appeal by contacting RTS or the U.S. Department of Transportation.  Democrat & Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brandy Solomon of Rochester is learning to swim through free summer lessons at the YMCA as drowning deaths have risen and many adults have never taken lessons. YMCA aquatic director Omar Hidalgo-Rojas said the program is crucial for safety—CDC data shows more than half of US adults lack basic swimming skills.  WXXI News
