  • Yesterday, Aug. 7, Rochester firefighters rescued a dog and her nine puppies born under floorboards at a Champlain Street home—Truck 5 and Engine 7 were involved—and a resident of the home said she will care for the puppies.  ABC 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • LiDestri Foods will invest $30 million in its 1.5 million-square-foot Greece facility to build a 'super plant' with a new cooking system to speed up production+ it will relocate workers from its Fairport facility in phases between this fall and fall 2026 while keeping the Fairport site for future manufacturing.  Democrat & Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • A New York appellate court cut Hannah Thomas's prison term for the 2020 killing of her mother on West Parkway in Greece from 25 years to 5 years+ the court cited evidence of long-term abuse and she was released on parole July 31 while her boyfriend remains imprisoned.  ABC 13
  • Child Victim’s Act survivors voted last week to take a $246 million deal with the Catholic Diocese of Rochester after a six-year fight, and the case will be finalized on Sept. 5 when survivor Carol DuPré ends her four-year practice of wearing only black (she will wear white to mark a fresh start).  Spectrum News

  • The Flotsam River Circus is set to anchor at Corn Hill Landing in Rochester today as it sails along the Erie Canal from Buffalo to New York City. The circus will perform at 7 p.m. today and again on Saturday—presenting acrobatic acts and musical shows to inspire local audiences.  WXXI News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Schools and trade unions in Rochester are training workers for Micron’s new campus, which will create nearly 50,000 jobs—40,000 of these in skilled trades. Onondaga Community College is building new classrooms and a simulated clean room while the IBEW is expanding its training center to double apprenticeship intake.  Spectrum News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Foodlink and Rochester Ecology Partners are running the first Growing Good Summer Enrichment Program at Foodlink’s Lexington Avenue Community Farm where elementary kids learn about insects, plants, and soil through hands-on activities. The program started last month and will end next week—while a $2.5 million farm expansion nearly doubles the space available for future learning.  WXXI News

  • Mayor Malik Evans introduced Rochester's new 'Rehabilitate the Dream' pilot program on August 7, which lets residents turn vacant properties into renovated homes with favorable mortgages + financial counseling for those who agree to live there for at least 15 years. Since 2022, the city has supported over 3,000 affordable units + 850 market-rate units as part of a nearly $1.5 billion investment to boost home ownership.  ABC 13

  • UR Thompson Health in Canandaigua is expanding its birthing center and adding imaging services to serve a growing population in Ontario County amid rural hospital struggles — the facility will soon build an extra 18-bed unit and an 8-bed progressive care unit to meet rising demand.  News 10
