  • Residents at Briar Manor in Brighton were affected by a gas leak on July 28 that left them without hot water and laundry services and are still facing these issues after a second notice on August 3 — many have had to use local laundromats and gyms until repairs are completed.  Rochester First
  • Central Church of Christ lost power last August after RG&E shut off service due to an $85,000 overdue bill dispute—Minister Clifford Florence Sr. said extra late fees and unclear billing have forced the church to find creative ways to heat and light the building during services. The church, which is a historic center for Rochester’s Black community, continues to face financial and operational challenges nearly a year later.  Rochester Beacon
  • The Neighborhood of the Arts is hosting its annual Summer Social—set for this Saturday, Aug. 9 from 10 to 5 at Three Heads Brewing—and Neighborhood president Chris Fanning said tickets are available now.  ABC 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 24-year-old Greece resident died when his speeding 2006 Suzuki crashed into a Nissan SUV at Durand Eastman Beach in Irondequoit on August 3 — officers said a pursuit beginning at 12:15 p.m. lost the rider near Sweet Fern Road and first aid efforts were unsuccessful.  Democrat & Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Robert White, 45 — accused of attacking a nurse outside Highland Hospital on July 24 and causing a concussion, a fractured nasal bone and dental injuries — did not show up in court Monday while the grand jury continues reviewing the case and he remains in jail.  ABC 13
  • Rochester police said they shot 38-year-old Akintunde Campbell last night near Thurston Road and Ernestine Street when he refused to drop his gun during a vehicle break-in attempt, and a handgun was found near his body; no officers were hurt and an internal investigation with a state Attorney General review is underway.  NewsRadio WHAM
  • Former Marcy Corrections Officer Christopher Walrath received a 15-year prison sentence on Monday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the beating death of inmate Robert Brooks, whose bodycam video showed he was attacked on Dec. 9 when transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility and died the next day at Marcy Correctional Facility.  ABC 13

  • Regional Health Reach held its third annual health fair Monday, Aug. 4 at Alexander Park to offer free health screenings, insurance enrollment and haircuts for Rochester’s homeless residents — an event that coincided with National Health Center Week.  ABC 13
