The 5th Annual Kyle's SlapShot Challenge Tournament & Festival is taking place this weekend at Rochester Ice Center to benefit Golisano Children's Hospital—featuring Jr. Amerks players, live music, carnival games, food trucks, and an auction—and officially launching the 2025-26 season.
At a memorial service on Saturday at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, more than 600 people gathered to remember Rishard Harvey, who died in a single-car crash on July 20.
His father and brother created a college scholarship fund in his name—honoring his love of learning and his lasting impact on the community.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester hosted its 4th Annual Family Reunion on Saturday, August 2—bringing together families who had received help during a child's critical illness through fun activities like ziplining, rock climbing, and boating.

Local residents enjoyed the Park Avenue Summer Stroll held Saturday in the historic neighborhood, with food, live music, art, and family activities from local shops, the museum, and the Park Avenue Green.

🚨 Crime
A 33-year-old man riding a scooter was killed in a crash on the city’s northwest side when he collided with a car at the intersection of Dewey Avenue and Avis Street just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday—police said no drugs or alcohol were involved.
Rochester Police say a man in his 30s was fatally shot during an argument inside an apartment on Niagara Street at about 11:45 p.m. on August 1— the Major Crimes Section Homicide Unit is investigating with no suspects in custody.
🎭 Culture
Yesterday the 55th annual Puerto Rican Festival parade took place on East Main Street—participants proudly showcased Puerto Rican culture by marching from East and Alexander to Parcel 5 where the festival was held, featuring flags, colorful costumes and local dance groups.
🎓 Education
The Rochester Board of Education approved a one-year extension to the teacher contract to allow time for talks on a new long-term deal—this move includes a 4% raise and a $2,500 bonus for eligible teachers and is pending a union vote at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
RTA President Adam Urbanski said the plan will help keep current teachers and fill vacancies during a shortage.
