ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On June 21, a 28-foot boat carrying 10 people capsized on the western side of Lake Tahoe near D.L. Bliss State Park, causing eight deaths—including three locals—and injuring two survivors as new NTSB details reported the boat faced 8‑to‑10‑foot waves with hail while most were not wearing life jackets.  Rochester First

CRIME NEWS

  • Leonel Yas Pena, 24, turned himself in to police after fatally striking 70-year-old Hank Brown near S. Union Street and Buena Place on June 14th—he now faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene, and driving while intoxicated.  ABC 13

  • Rochester native Chuck Mangione, a celebrated jazz trumpeter and composer, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on July 22—his music touched many local and national fans and his legacy endures.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Rochester’s sixth annual Black Culture Festival will take place July 26 — 27 at Parcel 5 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature over 50 Black-owned businesses, food trucks, artists and community groups, while a theme of Dripping in Culture highlights African-American influence in fashion, creativity and entrepreneurship.  Democrat & Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hochul will join Damar Hamlin at Bills Training Camp today to support cardiac arrest training in schools after 12-year-old Desha Walker collapsed in her gym and later passed away. The press conference backs Desha’s Law—requiring public schools to offer emergency heart response training and a plan for students and staff.  Rochester First

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Kathy Hochul signed Desha’s Law at the Buffalo Bills training camp— the law requires every public school to have a written plan for cardiac emergencies with accessible AEDs and trained staff. The legislation honors Desha Sanders, a 12-year-old who died after collapsing during a basketball game, and it aims to speed up emergency response in schools.  News 10
  • Physician assistants will attend a conference at Nazareth University today to discuss how they can ease the shortage of healthcare providers in emergency departments, primary care clinics and rural settings. Conference speakers note that state lawmakers are considering a bill to let experienced PAs practice without a supervising physician — Rochester job postings show salaries ranging from $112,000 to $166,000.  WXXI News
