  • Residents at The Northfield assisted living facility in Perinton were told on Monday they must move out in 11 days as Family Service of Rochester shuts down its residential programming due to financial issues—legislator Rachel Barnhart and residents questioned why no steps were taken to secure additional funding or delay the move until CDS Monarch completes its ownership transfer.   Rochester First

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, three people suffered serious injuries in a three-vehicle crash on East Avenue near North Union Street when a speeding car ran a red light and hit a van + a stopped car, and police said six people were hurt overall with three in critical condition taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.  Democrat & Chronicle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • One-ROC and the West Main Gateway Project team held an information session Monday at 5 p.m. at the Visual Studies Workshop on King Street for business owners between Broad and Genesee streets to learn how to apply for a city grant that offers up to $250,000 or covers 90% of costs—part of a $10 million funding program with $6 million set aside for grants.  News 10

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge granted a partial summary judgment in a suit that alleged two Monroe County jail deputies used excessive force against Richard Dzionara-Norsen during his November 2020 jail stay, and the ruling stated the force was objectively unreasonable and excessive—sending the case to a jury to decide if compensation is warranted.  News 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Iron Smoke Distillery in Fairport hosted its first annual 'Keep the Arts Alive' benefit concert on Sunday to support local artists through local music performances. Owner Tommy Brunette said all proceeds went to the Genesee Valley Council of the Arts to help programs facing cuts from federal funding.  News 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Big Beautiful Bill Act replaced current student loan repayment plans with a standard plan and an income-driven plan and set new rules for deferments and Pell Grant eligibility. Jack Wallace from YREFY explained the changes on July 14.  ABC 13
  • Rochester City School District students built their own computers at the free BuildIT Computer Camp provided in partnership with Great Lakes Gaming & Shift2. The weeklong camp gave high schoolers hands-on skills with computer hardware and software along with a free laptop for homework and personal use.  News 10
  • The City Council has launched a summer reading program from Read Alliance that gives 90 first, second and third graders a free phonics-based curriculum paired with teen tutors—designed to help students improve by a full grade level. The program began July 7 and will run until August 14 with plans to expand to the school year if it succeeds.  WXXI News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, Brooks Avenue will be closed for a pavement project from the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport ramp to Deep Rock Road in Gates. Crews will set up a detour via Buell Road and State Route 33A and drivers are told to slow down to protect workers — the road will reopen by late September.  News 10
