  • Yesterday, Rochester hosted several summer events such as the Party in the Park kickoff at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park featuring tribute bands and food vendors and a dog-friendly baseball game at Innovative Field—where a dog parade took place before first pitch. A free Pride Celebration was held at the Memorial Art Gallery—followed by a family movie night at the Frederick Douglass R-Center.  News 10
  • The Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport unveiled a program that uses QR codes to let deaf—hard-of-hearing travelers download a free app connecting them to live interpreters for TSA, restaurants, and gate changes. Airport officials said the effort will also train staff to clear up communication issues and prevent missed flights.  Rochester First

  • Heroes Brewing Co. in Rochester announced it will close on July 12 as the owners said a weak craft beer market and changing tastes forced the decision—loyal customers say they will miss the spot that supported 85 local charities with over 60,000 cans of beer.  Democrat & Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Rochester saw fewer crimes at midyear as total reports dropped 13% and burglaries fell by 45% compared to the same period last year. City officials and the police are working with state and local agencies to keep improving safety in the city.  Rochester Beacon
  • A Rochester man Paolo Smith pleaded guilty last month to second degree manslaughter and leaving the scene after hitting 46 year old Lashawnda Leggett last August in a West Avenue parking lot + he was sentenced today to a term of three to nine years in prison.  NewsRadio WHAM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ontario County is facing a major hurdle in building 1,500 new homes due to rising energy costs—an Uptown Landing project with 680 housing units was told it would incur an extra $10 million to $15 million to power the development. Economic Development Director Ryan Davis said county officials will work with utility companies and apply for state grants to help cover these costs.  Rochester First
