CRIME NEWS

  • The trial for Ontario County teen Evan Haggett, accused of running a stop sign that caused a fatal crash killing 62-year-old Thomas Doherty in Walworth on January 2, 2024, has started in a crowded courtroom as his request not to appear was granted—his hearing is adjourned until July 28 while the victim's family seeks accountability.  Rochester First

CULTURE NEWS

  • Joe Locke, a Rochester Music Hall of Famer and award-winning vibraphonist, performed with his group on Sunday at the Rochester International Jazz Festival and spoke about his deep connection to the city. The festival—running through Saturday, June 28—will offer over 285 shows across 18 stages.  News 10
  • Rochester native Scott Mayo, who has worked with Paul McCartney and other music legends, performed last night at Jazz Street Stage and will perform today at the Theater at Innovation Stage during his first homecoming show—returning home for a special Jazz Festival event.  ABC 13

  • Rochester hosted a global watch party for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s first images on Monday, June 23 at the Strasenburgh Planetarium—where local viewers saw clear images of galaxies, nebulas, and asteroids—and the event celebrated a key local contribution to the observatory’s technology.  WXXI News
  • On Monday, Rochester schools sent kids home early because high temperatures in the 90s made classrooms unsafe + many parents supported the move to protect students. Both the Rochester City School District and Genesee Community Charter Schools dismissed classes early then and will do so again today as forecasts show even hotter weather.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy on May 5, leading to 12 local pharmacy closures and a drop in prescription access; the Rochester Pharmacy Access Coalition—composed of U of R Medical Center, Rochester Regional Health, Trillium Health and Jordan Health—is helping residents transfer prescriptions and locate alternate pharmacy services as closures continue through the end of the month.  Rochester Beacon
