COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A project is underway at River View Cemetery in Henrietta to clean and restore Revolutionary War veterans’ headstones and honor their legacy. Volunteers and local historians are using eco-friendly cleaning methods + planning to extend the work to Civil War headstones in coming months.  ABC 13
  • A local business owner is launching a weekly patrol at Charlotte Beach this week to promote peace by offering free handshakes + hot dogs to visitors. Police will monitor the effort as the group works to keep the park safe for families.  News 10
  • Following a 400-person brawl last weekend, police were seen at Ontario Beach Park on Monday while local leaders announced new safety measures for the coming weekend, which will include boats in the water, drones in the sky, and an automatic (10 p.m.) parking gate to limit access.  News 10
  • Local dads are calling an emergency meeting today to urge more positive father figures in the Rochester City School District after last week's teen fight at Ontario Beach Park. City officials and law enforcement are increasing patrols and adding auto-closing park gates to help prevent further disruptions.  News 10
  • Parents of Army Specialist Theodore Matthew Glende (a McQuaid graduate who died in Afghanistan in July 2012) remember his sacrifice as Rochester holds Memorial Day events honoring fallen soldiers. His name appears at the War on Terror Memorial and a new veterans’ memorial at McQuaid, dedicated in September, honors him.  News 10
  • A boat parade was held Monday near the Port of Rochester by the Rochester Yacht Club to honor veterans who never made it home (a retired Marine noted the importance of remembering the fallen).  News 10
  • At Riverside Cemetery on Lake Avenue, the sinking headstone of Private First Class Daniel Jose Rivera—who died in Iraq in 2009—is prompting his family to consider relocating him to Arlington National Cemetery as cemetery management has yet to address the issue.  News 10
  • On Memorial Day, Rochester families honored WWII soldiers after DNA technology identified remains decades later – Private Robert Cash was returned to relatives in Pittsford, Tech. Sgt. Farnham rejoined family in Village Gate, and Army Sgt. Pagliuso was laid to rest in Lyons.  News 10
  • Monroe County’s homeless population has doubled since the pandemic, straining shelters like the Open Door Mission downtown. The organization plans to add 80 beds by 2028 to boost capacity + provide long-term support for those in need.  WXXI News

  • Home Leasing sold most of its assets to Philadelphia-based Pennrose, ending a 20-year run in affordable housing. The transition will shift all employees to Pennrose while ongoing projects continue and remaining properties seek buyers.  WXXI News

  • Webster Schroeder won its second straight Class B flag football championship when it defeated Webster Thomas 27-6 on Saturday, May 23 at Gates Chili High School, pulling away in the second half amid rainy, chilly conditions.  Democrat & Chronicle
