- ➤ On Wednesday, May 13, the University of Rochester home healthcare honored 100-year-old WWII veteran Mason Fitch in Chili, N.Y., presenting him with an American flag, commemorative pin (awarded for his 35 South Pacific missions) and certificate. His family gathered to celebrate his service. ABC 13
- ➤ Twins Kacee and Thierry Sotile, sixth graders at Aquinas Institute, are being honored with the Do the Right Thing award for quickly calling 911 when their grandmother collapsed while gardening last summer — her treatment for dehydration helped her make a full recovery. News 10
- ➤ Memorial Art Gallery installed new evacuation chairs (designed to boost visitor safety) and Payton Roselli explained that the chairs will help visitors evacuate safely during emergencies. Democrat & Chronicle
- ➤ This weekend, a Rochester intersection gets a safety makeover when artists paint a mural & temporary curbs narrow Genesee Park Boulevard at Pioneer Street to slow traffic and protect walkers. - ➤ Target is challenging county action that cancelled its anchor agreement at the former Irondequoit Mall — the county used eminent domain before any redevelopment began. The company filed a late challenge in court and says the move was improper amid a national shift in mall usage. WXXI News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ At Saturday’s annual gala at the Memorial Art Gallery, leaders announced that admission will be free for everyone starting in early 2027 (part of the Free for All, Forever initiative) after raising over $9 million in support. The gallery will announce the official launch date in coming months. News 10
- ➤ The Susan B. Anthony Museum and House will launch the RightHear app (a free smartphone tool that uses markers to help visually impaired visitors navigate) in June. The system will also provide historical exhibit details for an inclusive museum experience. WXXI News
- ➤ The 128th annual Lilac Festival continues today at Highland Park with live music from Joe P, The Demos, and Jacob Asher—and Saturday offers the first Lilac Table while Sunday hosts the 5K and 10K races with local food and beverages. News 10

- ➤ On Wednesday, May 13, Monroe One BOCES students made their own barbecue sauce with help from Pauly Guglielmo and instructor Bonnie Zawiski. Student Jaydan Riddle’s sauce was picked as the best and was served with chicken at the Take Away Café (the chicken sold out). ABC 13
- ➤ Local school districts in Monroe County presented their annual budget proposals and candidate rosters ahead of the May 19 ballot — voters can review plans and proposed tax changes at designated polling sites from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. across districts like Brighton, Brockport, Churchville-Chili, and East Irondequoit.
