  • Lollypop Farm in Perinton is waiving adoption fees for those 60 and older for dogs, cats, small mammals, reptiles and birds through May 24 using a grant from Pets for the Elderly (kittens, puppies under 7 months and farm animals are excluded). Walk-ins are accepted on weekdays; appointments are required on weekends.  ABC 13

  • Ollie's Bargain Outlet in Henrietta was closed by the fire marshal on May 4 for multiple safety issues — including a leaking sprinkler, expired permits, and obstructed exits — and while work is underway, officials have not set a reopening date.  Democrat & Chronicle

  • Gas prices in Rochester hit a four-year high as the average climbed to $4.57, with AAA Western and Central New York reporting a similar rise driven by higher crude oil and shifting supplies. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • University of Rochester workers and students formed the UR Labor Coalition on Monday, May 11 to support staff in seeking fair contracts and better wages ahead of fall contract talks. The group unites union and non-union employees (three unions) committed to stronger worker representation.  ABC 13
  • Rochester police held a memorial service on Monday, May 11 at Civic Center Plaza to honor 16 fallen officers during National Police Week — Mayor Malik Evans expressed gratitude for the officers' service.  ABC 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kennedy Graves, an eighth-grade student from Spencerport Central School District, is honored for calling 911 when her dad showed stroke symptoms; her quick call triggered rapid care from URMC's mobile stroke unit—defusing a serious health crisis.
