COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rochester's largest Lilac Festival Parade will begin today at 10:30 a.m. at South Avenue and Science Parkway with marching bands, colorful floats, local organizations, and Grand Marshal Karen Iglesia leading the route north and then east to S. Goodman Street. Traffic will be impacted as parade staging starts at 8 a.m. and road closures begin at 9:15 a.m. along South Avenue and Elmwood Avenue—streets will reopen after the final units pass.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • The Rochester Lilac Festival opens today with parking in the main lot costing $7 before 2:30 p.m. on weekdays and $10 after 2:30 p.m. and on weekends, while a handicapped lot is available at 1440 South Ave; parking is free at the Golisano Institute lot at 150 Sawgrass Drive though a $5 shuttle is required on weekends — RTS routes 13 and 41 drop attendees near the park and parking is restricted on nearby streets.  Democrat & Chronicle

CRIME NEWS

  • Rochester police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in his 30s on the west side after responders arrived at 367 Orchard St at 9:45 p.m. Thursday and found him shot in his upper body—this marks the city’s ninth homicide of the year.  Democrat & Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 127th annual Lilac Festival kicked off at Highland Park in Rochester and is expected to attract over half a million visitors during its 10-day run. Local headliners Sir Woman and Katie Pruitt will perform today + residents celebrate spring with food, music and community events.  News 10
  • Today, the Rochester Lilac Festival began and offers live music from open to close; the schedule features headliner Katie Pruitt along with acts starting with Sir Woman on May 9 and extending to Beach Weather on May 18 — additional programming includes local high school bands, regional groups, and free family-friendly sets on the new Bach to Rock Sprouts Stage.  Democrat & Chronicle

  • Victor Saunders, Rochester’s leader who created the Office of Violence Prevention, died and was known for expanding programs like the Pathways to Peace. Mayor Malik Evans said he lost one of his closest advisors who also helped launch the Rochester Peace Collective to offer support to families affected by violence.  News 10
