COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reconnect Rochester kicks off Bike Week Friday at 7:15 p.m. with the 10-mile Light Up the Night ride at Genesee Valley Park Sports Complex — cyclists are encouraged to equip bikes with lights, and events continue daily until May 17 with a Queer History Tour starting at Three Heads Brewing.  WXXI News
  • News10 and ESL Federal Credit Union selected five winners for the ESL Heart of Service Award from over 130 entries; one winner will be revealed every Monday until all are announced and full stories air on News10NBC June 1-5.  News 10
  • Officials hosted an open house on Tuesday, May 5 to present updated designs for a 40-acre High Falls State Park near downtown, featuring a playground, open lawn, and restrooms—community ideas drove the plans. Construction will begin this fall, and later work will expand into the Genesee River gorge.  ABC 13
  • City leaders cut the ribbon Tuesday, May 5, at Maplewood Park on a new inclusive playground — key Genesee Riverway Trail improvements were also completed. A new nature center will open in July to serve as an environmental education hub.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country star Ella Langley launches her first solo tour tomorrow in Toledo. The Dandelion Tour runs through August and includes a local stop in Canandaigua (tickets starting at $209) after her album release in April.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • OFC Creations Theatre will host Queer the Rainbow: The Golden Girls Musical from May 14 to 31 — writer-director Eric Vaughan Johnson and actor Shawn Gray joined ARC Rochester to preview the production.  ABC 13

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Rochester jumped by 23 cents in one week to average $4.44 per gallon, according to AAA. At Costco in Henrietta—selling gas for $4.24 per gallon—analysts say prices may rise further until the Iran conflict ends.  News 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roberts Wesleyan University announced that Nicholas J. Willis will assume the role of president on July 1. Willis, a former math professor and TG Three partner (a consulting firm advising Christian colleges), will lead about 1,750 students across the university's programs.  WXXI News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bridge replacement on Chili Avenue near I-390 is causing traffic backups today as one lane remains closed; the DOT said major construction will start later this year and drivers should detour via Brooks Avenue + Genesee Park Boulevard with the project planned through fall 2028.  News 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • A recall of some Aldi Specially Selected crème brûlée desserts suspected of containing glass affects stores in seven states including New York, with use by (5/9); customers in the Rochester area are urged to return products under the store’s Twice as Nice guarantee.  Democrat & Chronicle

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Work began Tuesday, May 5 on a $72-million project to convert the former Gateway Building on East Main Street into 129 all-electric affordable apartments, which include units for people with mobility and sensory disabilities. The development is part of efforts to revitalize downtown.  ABC 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Decorated Olympic figure skaters performed Tuesday night at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester as part of the Stars on Ice Tour. The show (headlined by world champion Ilia Malinin and Olympic gold medalists Alysa Liu and Amber Glenn) came one day before the team continues in St. Louis.  News 10
