  • The Brighton Fire Department held a recruitment event on Sunday, May 3 to encourage local women to explore firefighting careers; the interactive workshop featured hands-on training and prompted several participants to consider volunteering in the community.  ABC 13
  • On Sunday, May 3, the annual Kite Flight brought expert kite fliers and kids to Ontario Beach Park in Charlotte where unique kite designs soared over Lake Ontario. The Ontario Beach Park Program Committee organized the event to celebrate local art and community spirit.  News 10

  • International Market Plaza Days kicked off Sunday with live music & food vendors at the plaza, and three new vendors launched their local businesses. Events run on Sundays from May through Oct. 11, with next Sunday's program featuring a Mother’s Day celebration.  News 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices have risen over 30 cents a gallon in the past week and now average about $4.45 nationwide, which could soon affect pumps in Rochester. Experts say the higher rates may persist until supply issues ease (with fuel releases and production boosts underway).  WXXI News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Late April wildfires across New York were sparked by illegal burns + power line problems and a faulty catalytic converter, prompting officials to urge residents to follow the burn ban until May 14 and plan controlled burns to lessen future risks.  Democrat & Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Sunday, May 3, models walked the runway at Casa Larga Vineyards (in Perinton) to raise funds for breast cancer survivors. In its sixth year, the event raised nearly $1 million and brought community members together around shared experiences.  ABC 13
