  • IslandFit CEO Eke Aiono hosted a cycling training session on April 30 for riders in the Finger Lakes Tour de Cure, a bike ride that raises funds for diabetes research; he has led the event for 18 years (he has a family connection to the disease) and the ride is scheduled for June 7.   ABC 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Rochester police said 18-year-old Michael Garcia was charged with attempted second degree murder, first degree assault and two counts of second degree criminal possession of a weapon after he shot a man outside a home on Alphonse Street and unintentionally hit a 17-year-old girl inside during a late-night retaliation—both victims were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Federal agents arrested Rochester father of five Dilbar Gul Dilbar on May 1 for allegedly using forged documents to secure a Special Immigrant Visa—authorities say he submitted fraudulent paperwork that led to a search of his Blossom Road home and he remains in custody as a flight risk.  WXXI News

  • Former doctoral student Rebecca Bryant Novak filed a civil rights complaint against Eastman School of Music after she was expelled in February for reporting harassment by a former instructor—she is seeking punitive and other damages—while the school said it followed all state and federal guidelines.  News 10

  • On May 1, local residents needing home care faced problems after New York State switched CDPAP to a single payroll system—Gwendolyn Preston and Kellie Fulkrod said delayed payments and reduced hours have left them struggling to get the help they need.  ABC 13
