ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday morning, deputies responded to a crash on Brockport-Spencerport Road between Sweden Walker and Gallup roads near Sweden when an SUV struck a stopped delivery truck—killing the SUV driver and hospitalizing two truck occupants with minor injuries, and the road is expected to stay closed for an extended duration.  ABC 13

CRIME NEWS

  • An 18-year-old was charged after a double shooting on Rochester’s northeast side led to an hours-long investigation in Brockport—city resident Michael Garcia faces charges of attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon—while a 17-year-old girl remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being shot on Wednesday morning on Alphonse Street.  News 10
  • Sandra Boehlert asked U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan to bond three detained men—two of whom were moved 1,900 miles from Rochester to New Mexico and one with a May 8 plea hearing—as part of a controversial ICE and RPD sweep that arrested 133 people over four days.  News 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former doctoral student Rebecca Bryant Novak filed a civil rights complaint alleging she was unlawfully expelled from Eastman School of Music in retaliation for reporting harassment — the case will move to a public hearing if HR finds probable cause. Graduate students are striking to demand a fair process for forming a union, and the university says it remains committed to a safe and respectful environment.  Rochester First
  • Lollypop Farm will offer hands-on pet care classes starting this weekend with a free backyard chickens course on Sunday, May 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. and a pet first aid and CPR course on Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with a fee of $75. Additional free classes on cat behavior and dog behavior will be held on May 17 and May 24 to help pet owners learn more about their animals.  News 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kathy Hochul announced a budget deal that will triple New York's Child Tax Credit—offering up to $1,000 for children under four and $500 for children four to sixteen. The change will benefit 1.6 million families with incomes up to $170,000 and will take effect with the new fiscal year.  NewsRadio WHAM
  • A State Supreme Court judge ruled that Rochester’s Police Accountability Board can no longer investigate misconduct — issue subpoenas, recommend discipline, or publicly release findings. The board, approved by a voter referendum in 2019, now has reduced authority and its plans to appeal are unknown.  NewsRadio WHAM
