CRIME NEWS

  • Lakwan Hannah, 28, was indicted today on charges of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, assault—plus two gun crimes from a May 4 shooting on Lyell Avenue that left two dead and two injured after an earlier altercation with the victims.  NewsRadio WHAM
  • Duane Girdner, a 65-year-old Rochester man, died on April 28th when his Vespa collided with a car that failed to stop at a stop sign in LeRoy—Genesee County Sheriff's deputies said the crash is under investigation.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Make-A-Wish of Western New York is hosting its annual gala with dancing, stories, and a live auction on Saturday, May 3 at the Hyatt Regency Rochester — an event to help fulfill children’s wishes and raise funds for the charity.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Border Czar Tom Homan will visit Rochester on Tuesday morning to meet with members of the Locust Club — the union for local police officers — in a private, invitation-only event with tight security. His visit follows a March 24 video of RPD officers helping Border Patrol agents during a traffic stop that sparked a debate over sanctuary city policies and led several groups to plan rallies at City Hall and outside the Public Safety Building.  News 10
  • ICE is reinstating the SEVIS status for international students at RIT and UR—students who lost their legal status recently—after court orders halted the terminations, and the move will protect about 5,000 students from deportation. It lets them keep studying while their cases are reviewed.  Democrat & Chronicle
  • Rochester City Council approved more than $4 million for projects including renovations at MLK Park and environmental cleanup at the old Falls Street industrial plant—part of the upcoming High Falls State Park project scheduled for completion in 2029—while also allocating $22,000 for trash cleanup in the East End.  News 10
  • Mayor Malik Evans hosted a roundtable meeting with over 40 community leaders on Tuesday to address concerns raised by federal officials and community members who feel the city is under attack—meeting plans were established before Border Czar Tom Homan visited the Locust Club to meet union leaders representing police officers.  News 10
  • Former acting ICE director Tom Homan visited Rochester and his appearance sparked protests by residents who recalled a controversial March 24 traffic stop when local police assisted federal immigration agents — an action seen as a violation of the city's sanctuary policy.  Democrat & Chronicle
