COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 15th Flower City Challenge will take place on Sunday, April 27 with a half marathon at 7:30 a.m., a family 5K at 7:40 a.m. and a kids half-mile run at 10:30 a.m., all starting and finishing at Parcel 5. Rochester Regional Health partnered with YellowJacket Racing and Fleet Feet to curate the event—over 2,400 runners are registered and a public Race Expo is held today and Sunday at Fleet Feet at The Armory.  Rochester First

BUSINESS NEWS

  • EvolvOptic, formed after Advanced Glass Industries acquired Glass Fab, will spend $5.1 million at Emerson Street to create up to 40 jobs over the next five years — the project will receive up to $600,000 in state tax credits and support from Monroe County, the city of Rochester and Greater Rochester Enterprise.  Rochester Beacon

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating a gunpoint robbery that happened just before 9 last night on East Main Street just off North Goodman in the Beechwood area, where the victim chased the suspect on 490 after a shot was fired and an abandoned car was later found on Broadway (if you have any information, call 911).  NewsRadio WHAM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UR graduate students went on strike Monday after a year of stalled talks with university officials over bigger stipends, easier workloads, and protection for international students near the River Campus entrance on Wilson Boulevard and Elmwood. Local unions + Mayor Malik Evans joined the protest as the students push to form a union for better treatment.  Campus Times
  • Students from RIT will showcase over 430 innovative projects at Imagine RIT this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on campus and free parking is offered while volunteers will run shuttles from Monroe Community College until 6 p.m. if campus lots fill.  News 10
  • Students from Rochester Prep's Saint Jacob Campus went on a walk Thursday morning to raise autism awareness and passed through a tunnel that shows how people see, hear and feel things—helping young students learn that each person is different. Principal Kelly Gardner said the event is meant to support classmates who need extra help in class—adding to the school’s effort to include everyone.  News 10

  • A New York Focus investigation found that for 20 years, state police quietly kept a list of more than 5,100 people they say are gang members and shared it with ICE for immigration work. The system—called GRIP—uses broad rules like who they hang out with, where they go, and how they dress and has not been checked by outsiders.  Rochester Beacon
  • New York police enforced Operation Safe Stop Day yesterday to catch drivers illegally passing stopped school buses—imposing fines from $250 to $1,500 and potential license revocation for repeat offenders to protect children.  NewsRadio WHAM
