COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Books and Crannies, a new used bookstore on South Union Street near Spencerport, opened in December 2024 to unite book lovers and boost inclusive employment for neurodivergent individuals (owner Laura Venditti said the store aims to support local talent) as employees praise its welcoming work environment.  FOX Rochester
  • City officials announced Tuesday that Neighbors in Action grants will support 74 community projects including CPR training, public art, and neighborhood events. Funding is provided by ESL Federal Credit Union + Rochester Area Foundation to strengthen local neighborhoods.  ABC 13
  • Holy Childhood is set to host its 13th Party at Center Ice — its biggest fundraiser supporting inclusion for those with intellectual disabilities. The event begins at 6 p.m. Friday, April 17 at Tim Hortons Iceplex with local food and entertainment.  ABC 13

  • Ska punk band Sublime will perform at CMAC on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on April 17 through Ticketmaster.com.  Democrat & Chronicle

  • St. John Fisher University is offering a one-year masters residency program in inclusive education for career changers, featuring a paid classroom placement ($25,000 salary) at local school districts to help ease the special education teacher shortage.  WXXI News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nazareth University is hosting the Send Silence Packing exhibit today on campus (with backpacks donated by families who lost loved ones) to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. Trained volunteers are on hand to guide visitors to appropriate crisis resources.  News 10

  • The Irondequoit planning board approved a 93‑unit apartment complex on Hudson Avenue on April 13 after resolving density and historic barn concerns (the $30M project includes a 129‑space parking lot) and Eagle Ridge Properties will plan to develop the complex soon.  Democrat & Chronicle
